Just read about it. More powerful than the quake which hit Christchurch a few years ago. Heard there is damage in Wellington and they have tsunami warnings in place. Apparently people are fleeing to higher ground. Kiwi lives near Wellington. Hope all is well there Kiwi. Stay safe.

Hope all's well down there Kiwi?

Loved Christchurch and surrounding area when I was down there touring the country - and have friends who moved there for the clear-up and rebuild after the last quake.

Hope all is well Kiwi. Have also got friends in Wellington - haven't heard from them but hoping they are fine.

I think Kiwi should be OK, he lives on the northern island and not near the coast!

I'm sure he would of at least felt the quake where he lives!

The quake's epicentre was 90km's North/North East of Christchurch of the South Island. I am sure I remember Kiwi saying he lived in either Upper Hutt or Lower Hutt, both of which are just outside Wellington and fairly close to the sea. I drove through both places on my way to Masterton. Wellington is at the bottom of the North Island and only a couple of hundred miles away from the epicentre across the Cook Straits. Thank god the initial death toll is only two. With such a strong earthquake, you would expect the death toll to be a lot higher. Hopefully things aren't as bad as they could have been for the NZ people.

Sorry, my bad. I must have been bunking off school the day they did NZ in geography lessons!

Let us all know your ok Kiwi hopefully when you get a chance Bro!

Wellington had a real good shake with some damage to buildings but mostly superficial, everyone's advised to stay away from CBD until buildings inspected & given the all clear.

Top of South Island has been worse hit with at least 2 fatalities & major land slips etc.

thank you all and what a good memory you have fingy
biggest shake i have ever felt
one of the fault lines runs along the hutt river about a km from my house
luckily it was at night time because their seems to be a lot of glass down off of buildings

i had an early start this morning and didnt realise a tsunami warning had been issued
lots of cars on the rd until i got near the coast
they must have been heading for higher ground because i had the motorway to myself

know why now

apparently the cbd was closed but there was no cordon as i sent 250 metres of concrete in there without issue
sounds like monday off for most here
