Well yesterday was simply a trial match for the fringe players, and boy did they **** it up.

S.Taylor was dodgy all game
D.Guthrie was too slow, his touch was poor
R.Taylor was OK when he came on, a few crosses but nothing came and then a poor attempt of a free kick at the end.
Ranger was hopeless! His family were at the game infront of me on the upper tier and I felt sorry for them, one because Ranger was getting abuse all around them and two, they had to watch him play! Impact sub you could say, but he was worse yesterday than Ameobi at that age.
Lovenkrands surely isn't the first choice striker when everyone is fit? He had 2 great chances and both should have been goals.

The whole team was poor apart from Harper, Williamson and Colo and possibly Simpson. Everyone else kept doing daft things and giving the ball away. Such a poor performance.

I can't blame Pardew for that, we had so many injuries and suspensions, and had everyone been fit yesterday I have no doubt in saying we would have won that. Pardew needs to spend and get a new back up because that lot are useless!

£41 for that, no effort at all!

There was absolutely no creativity in the centre we ran out of ideas again. Need Ben Arfa or play a midfield of Ferguson, Tiote, Barton, Gutierrez, with Nolan behind Shola or even flamin Kuqi

As soon as the team was announced I knew we were up **** creek.

Without Nolan and Shola we had no fire power.

Guthrie had a good game against Wolves but couldnt carry it on to Villa game, just not good enough.

Saylor jesus the guy thinks he brilliant, best thing Pardew did was taking him off and putting Collo back at CB.

Ranger **** plain and simple.

Joey no to captain he get's too wound up and forget's to play football.

Saylor was good! Colo was a ghost in midfield, just wasn't there. Guthrie was one of our best players! I agree about the free kick, got to hit the target, he shouldn't be talked up as a free kick specialist. Ranger and Lovenkrands were both a disgrace. Simpson was diabolical and Jonas and Jose were really quite poor.

I am basing Taylors performance on the first half, he was poor, getting caught on the ball, giving the ball away. I remember the header which he put out for a corner! Christ. He won a few headers but still, was disappointed.

He looked rusty more than anything, suppose that's what happens when Campbell plays ahead of you. Definitely not match fit, but still put in a reasonably solid performance.

Huh? Guthrie was actually quite good(in the first half) but faded away in the second and looked out of stamina/lack of match fitness, he did get caught out at certain times but it was a solid performance in general I thought. Saylor always looked shakey/clumsey, Raylor was OK(he impacted the game to a slight extent I thought), Ranger was desperately poor and looked like another Strolla Ameobi and Loverman worked hard but lacked quality at the crucial moments.

Really? I thought Guthrie had a poor all round game

Well he was poor in the second half but I thought he had a strong first-half. Game of two halfs shall we say.

Ranger was bad, bad, bad. Lovern wasn't great but a lot of that was down to poor service, Barton & Jonas both kept hitting the first defender. Think the likes of Raylor, Saylor & Guthrie showed rustiness. Bit too early to write them off, I think they need a few more games. Biggest disappointment for me yesterday was (with the exception of Ranger because I don't rate him anyway) Barton, very poor disribution, both from the wings and when he switched to the middle of the park, was trying to spread the play but if he isn't hitting the man he might as well have just given it straight back to Villa. I was surprised he stayed on the field, he just seemed to want a row with someone, as Sky commentator said, Joey was a booking waiting to happen.
Harper had a solid game, not much he could do about the goal but we severely lacked Nolan's leadership and nouse in build up and in front of goal, he gets slated for his lack of pace but if he'd have played yesterday we would have got something out of it, I'm certain.

Cant agree about Guthrie he was very poor and is inconsistent.

Ranger was very poor but at the end of the day he was all we had due to injuries. Maybe a loan would give him the kick up the backside he needs.

REP, well said!
We badly miss Nolan when he misses out more than anyone else IMO.

Hmmm, seems we were all watching different games!

Guthrie got praised by the commentators none stop but for what? He played at least 3 looping long balls out of play and to absolutely no-one, got caught in possession and didn't do anything to threaten! STaylor was gash and I actually thought Colo and Gutierrez looked alright in midfield. Colo got stuck in, did A LOT of running to close the space down in front of the defence and played lots of simple passes (did the odd random trick but generally lost possession when he tried to be too clever).

Gutierrez played 3 awesome through balls, split the defence each time! Had he had someone decent up front he would've definitely had an assist to his name!

Ranger, what needs to be said? He is an impact player. He is selfish on the ball, has no vision or tactical awareness. Has all the physical attributes but none of the mental ones!

I personally didn't think Ranger was that awful, in the first half at least. He held the ball up well and had that chance, second half, the less said about it the better I think. Definately better as an impact player and should probably be loaned out next season.

The team as a whole were pretty naff especially Barton and Enrique considering they're two of our key players, although Jonas, Guthrie and Colo were decent. Was particularly disappointed about Enrique, I told my Spanish mate, who'd never watched a Toon game before, that he was amazing...I guess I jinxed him.
