How the **** did he set us back when we were already on our last legs? To set something back, you have to go backwards If you claim he wasted an opportunity then fair enough, but he didn't take us backwards!
Like everything else in life, things change with time. Kenny seemed to have stuck with the same formula he used during his first stint. Fergie had that ability to change and evolve with the times and that what made him so successful.
thats a fair point to a degree Smithy, except one manager had 5 yrs to get it right the other didn't. we won a cup in his first full season back in charge, i should imagine the next target would have been top 4 or title considering we had the cup win we needed. like i said though one we will never know sadly, he could of if afforded time adapted, but yes times had changed, but so could he have done, never know.
I'll reciprocate and say that's a fair point to a certain extent. BUT you didn't give Hodgson time and felt there was no point in giving extra years as you couldn't see improvement even if he had been given 5 years...With KD it will have been the same. The owners must have really wanted to give more time (no one is stupid enough to sack a fans favourite without serious thought!!!) but just couldn't see any improvement in the club's fortune with him.
See, this is the only angle I will agree with when it comes to Kenny's sacking. If you want to give a manager time to get things right then fair enough, Kenny didn't have time on his side unfortunately. The bit I disagree with is FSG giving Kenny a three year contract in the first place if this was their position.
Which is different to setting us back. Hicks and Gillette set us back, FSG/Kenny/Comolli wasted a opportunity.
previous owners hired him and we all know why, yes man. he may have been successful if give time, cant argue with that, accept he hasn't actually done anything of note in this country accept keep teams from getting relegated, not really the direction this club wanted to be heading in, football was **** and he was as motivating as a wet fart, also didnt tell you ****s to **** off when you came sniffing for our players, you would have been pissed if fergie hadnt done that to us. he is England manager now, and he is very experienced and prob deserves it as he has a lot of knowledge in the game, fair enough good for him, always felt he would be ok national team wise managing, but club manager, not for me.
That may be your opinion but it IS a disputable one and not based upon mere sentiment. If you wish to trade in fact then stick to fact!
wasted opportunity...setting us back: this is all semantics. You know it and I know it... A "wasted opportunity" in today's football world is almost certainly the same as "setting us back". Why? because when everyone else (chelsea, city, spurs, united, arsenal) is improving their team and squads by spending (investing?) millions, standing still by throwing away the money is equivalent to moving backwards... #beatingaboutthebush
I wouldn't say they're mutually exclusive. Wasting an opportunity can set you back - say if your rivals continue to progress, as ours have, or issues not rectified due to the wasted opportunity continue or worsen.
standing still in this league is setting yourself back. utd have set themselves back.... while a little run might pick their fans up now over the longer season i am confident that city will continue to improve and gel and pass them by miles. same for chelsea. LFC under dalglish and comolli went mad. Under rafa and G&H LFC had a continual decline with players i would not play in the championship.. kyrgiakos, voroin, degen jovanovic.... Dalglish signed players i didn't agree with downing, adam, carroll but also enrique henderson and suarez so squanderd? no but the mistakes were so bad it held us back.... rodgers made awful errors too. We cannot afford a summer like rodgers first, right now his january looks great but both summers are uninspiring. minglot for reina is still not an improvement IMO, only a wage issue and aspas, ilori and alberto at best are future buys and at worst no better than borini and the like. Sahko and toure are improvements IMO but the rest can equally be called missed opportunities as the represent 21mil minimum invested in players i don't think improve us. So..... Did kenny set us back? no thats dumb. the record is clear he won a trophy but failed to improve league, spent 60odd mil on trash.... rodgers spent a lot in his first summer and got 7th... he didn't improve our league position either. This season is better thus far but we can easily be 7th from where we are in short order. we must improve in january to have a hope of sustaining where we are now. midfield in particular.
You could argue Henderson is turning out to be a decent buy - but that's not really to do with Kenny. It's the player and Rodgers.
So Kenny and Comolli don't get the credit for signing him? That's getting the best of both worlds IMO
He has only become a good signing since after Kenny/Comolli left. Do they get credit for signing him, paying too much and then playing him out of his position, depth, shattering his confidence/reputation, making him a national joke... just because Rodgers was able to get him confident and performing?
