Godders - in total agreement with this; I remember last summer when so many of us were writing that we needed a new central defender (love your use of the term 'centre-half' BTW ) to replace Big J because it was clear the previous season his legs had all-but gone. Yet we managed to find Jos and that got us through. However, I believe Lady-Luck was kind to us last season with few injuries in the centre-half department (just could not resist using the term!) and, as we all know, she is a very fickle lass! With young Martin at Palace for the season - I do agree we need two centre-halves (again ) as cover and I am surprised that this position was not first on the shopping list.
You young lads do like to use all of these modern footballing terms and to make excessive use of those little smiley things (sometimes for cheeky purposes). When I played my best football, which was in the 50s, I played inside left and when my mates and I discuss football down the pub I am afraid we use terms from that era for player positions because that is how we played and understood roles within the game. If somebody asked me to play in the hole today I would probably turn up with my kit and a shovel!
I am not so young Godders – I will be 53 this year - so am fully conversant with 'old style positional names - as for the smiley things - I think that sometimes readers take the written word in a literal sense and do not always recognise when one is trying not to cause offense; so the smiley thing has its uses. Keep up the good work with your posts!
-back, -midfielder, -winger, in the hole, striker - explains itself really. Did your team play a 343 formation? Still used in some parts of the world.
