It's not rushing to his defence as much as its questioning the over the top criticism - I can not remember the last time his actions have directly caused a goal to be conceded via his lack of defensive work rate? I'd also say he's not there to defend, he needs the 8 behind him to cover for him yes but all the great wingers do but show me a time a RB has got away from him since he's come back from injury and contributed to a goal being conceded - before the injury layoff and after his volley against Wolves he was everyone's flavor of the month? I mean everyone's still backing Pope despite him trying to head a ball at ankle height causing him to miss the Cup final and then nearly getting a red card 2 weeks later vs Wolves with a truly awful touch and a great shoulder check - that one mistake vs Liverpool probably cost us both games - "Nick Pope In the middle of our goal". Trippier and Schar vs Liverpool and Man U were at fault for all 4 goals across those 2 games, stepping out erratically, missing headers etc even the second goal against City was down to Trip's stepping out playing a bad pass, yes he recovered but his tackle put the ball over to the CF who played in Gundogen to score. Wolves goal conceded - who slipped up again? Not ASM but Trippier. - "Kieran Trippier over the wall" Those 3 are heralded as class for us on a consistent basis yet make more mistakes leading to points dropped/goals conceded in the last few games than ASM has been all season. "Comes with the position" you may say but if that 's your point, my point above stands - ASM ain't there to defend and we shouldn't need him to in all honesty. This defensive work rate argument is a hangover from Bruce for me and then because we are blessed to have someone like Miggy on the opposite wing who belts about all day every game everyone expects that from ASM, but they shouldn't, its not his game, never has been his game, never will be his game. Name me one winger in the top 6 teams who get's back and wins 2/3 tackles a game, a few headers on the edge of their own box, crucial interceptions in the final third? Sancho? Nope! Salah? Don't think so! Anthony? Ye...no! Further down the league - Bowen, or Zaha? Nada! Adarma Traore? Nah.
Obviously defenders are going to make more errors that lead to goals more often than mids because they're in the back line baring most of the responsibility. Critizing Trippier for the Wolves goal is harsh, he slipped, it wasn't a mistake, he just slipped, it was unlucky. Judging our back line vs Liverpool is also unfair because it was two exquisite passes that lead to both of those goals. I think vs Liverpool we did miss our big hitters like Bruno and Willock putting more pressure on the likes of Trent, who had no pressure placed on him and the freedom to play those passes in behind in the first place. I think our defenders are becoming a victim of their own brilliance as they have been the best defence in the league so far so every goal we can concede must have been their error, despite the fact that there was clear quality from the opposition in the build up. ASM doesn't put nearly enough work in defensively, not does he have the capability to do so.
This time last week he'd not lived up to his price tag and still hasn't. 60 million is the thing you're struggling with .. had to score 20 a season for this price.
Not if the 7 points we've gained in the games he's scored in mean we qualify for Europe. Then it's £60m well spent. I'm waiting for you to tear into Gordon: - £40+m - No goals - No assists - Missing games through injury Therefore must surely be "made of thin air", "adding nothing" and a "complete waste of money" SO FAR - if you apply your logic equally.
Same applies for Murphy then and the tea lady. The topic of conversation is people making a claim max isn't good enough just like they said Joelinton wasn't good enough. Saying so far a player has been a complete waste of money is not the same thing at all. If people don't understand the difference then it's pointless explaining it.
In fact I'm now in the vault digging out the posts about Joelintons price tag and how that was a waste of money. See you soon Oh his very song
I replied to you talking about Isak???? But you agree that Gordon is also made.of thin air, adding nothing and a complete waste of money, so far, then. Right? Or does that logic only apply to Isak?
Just 45 minutes. Wow! So that really is a complete waste of £40+m, so far, right? Not sure what you class as a year, but Isak has been here 7 months.
LOL!!!!!!!!!!! Until we've seen how many he's scores on average over the season over the next 5 years or so, we won't be able to tell that. I guess he's gonna be a complete waste of money for a while then...
The issue here is I'm not and didn't go after isak or declare him useless or unable. The conversation here is that you along with others aka the Joelinton can't control a ball brigade are declaring max incapable. I will not change my view that so far isaks return for a whopping 60 million come march has so far been a waste of money. He's obviously got ability but so far nah not done enough..
You are grouping everyone very generally as the 'Joelinton is useless brigade'. It's like it's you against the world on some moral crusade. Anyway, please answer, as I'm tired of asking: Do you think Anthony Gordon has been a complete waste of money, so far?
Well let's not get into the Isak discussion right one, as everyone knows that's batshit. I was never part of the Joelinton brigade, and always thought he was good and a top player could evolve. Maxi is a separate case, since we've transition in play under Howe, I just don't think he's keeping up with the change. A handful of decent games since Howe came in, but not many.
No I'm trying to show you the difference between saying a player isn't good enough and saying a player has so far not lived up to their price tag
I know, but I don't need you to "show me", because I'm not stupid. BUT ANSWER THE QUESTION. DO YOU THINK GORDON HAS BEEN A COMPLETE WASTE OF MONEY, SO FAR?
Gordon has to live upto his price tag like any player including isak . There's a defensive emotional response going on here , but that's because you like isak and he excites you. It's not my fault he's been injured and not playing... certain games he's been poor ..like max
