Bugger. Didn't realise Refuse Collette was running today. would have had a bit on that in my (failing) Betting Bank Series. Well done Uncle.
Quality Song ran in a pretty hot novices race. It would have been extraordinary for him to have got into the first two. We all knew that didn't we? Every year you have these horses that are catching pigeons on the gallops yet come to the races and fail. Some of them turn out to be quite useful in time, others are just gallop champions. Henry had this filly in 1978 that didn't run as a 2yo though talked about all the time. Its debut was the Nell Gwyn for which it started favourite (was already ante post 2nd favourite for the 1000G). It finished 2nd to last. In shock they ran it again a week later at Ascot and it finished last. It's name was Brigata: look it up. In 1986 he had a colt who from midsummer was being shouted in Newmarket as the best there was. It made its debut at Newmarket, again as a hot favourite, and ran a fairly flat performance to finish 3rd. Somewhat chastened his sights were lowered and he ran at Nottingham, and won. He then took his chance as the stable 2nd string in the Racing Post Trophy and hammered the field winning at 7-1 I believe. The horse was Reference Point and he won 2 classics the next year. These things happen. The only test is the racecourse and sometimes things don't work like clockwork. Notice Dartmouth won.
