I agree that data analysis is a key part of what the club has, is and hopefully will continue to do going forward. Where I differ from Robbie is his apparent willingness to exclude or minimise all other factors (or alternatively factors that we aren't able to quantify) and his selective quoting of data in isolation to prove a point. Taking a snapshot of something i.e. a players performance in a single game or a phase of play and extrapolating that over the longer term is not an effective way to analysis data. I also get the feeling that Robbie actively seeks data that supports his view rather than analysing the available information and seeking a conclusion. He also has a tendency to discount analysis that doesn't fit his view. Whilst we all suffer from confirmation bias, Robbie seems particularly unwilling to look at information and alternative views. For me a key aspect of data analysis is trends. I think the trend the club has been on / is on is an upward one since SW & DF arrived. Yes, last year post lockdown our performances on the pitch, were on a downwards one, the data i.e. the results clearly showed this, but overall our star was / is rising and we have made massive improvements as a club over the last 3 years. Robbie only focuses the outcome of our performance in the PL last year rather than focusing on the longer term gains i.e. Financial, experienced gained etc. He does not factor in key factors that significantly impacted on our performance i.e. injuries, Covid etc. Robbie puts greater value on the short term negatives over the longer term positives, so for me he's selective and his sample size of the information he provides is too small to be useful. Just to be clear this is not a request for more stats.
I wasn't drawing any "distinction" or making any comparison with us. I was simply providing a bit of information I thought might interest people, regarding Barnsley in particular. The parallel with Brentford is that both clubs are owned by people who themselves have backgrounds in data analysis (as also is Brighton for example).
I think there was an Athletic article recently where Michael Bailey interviewed the recruitment team at NCFC. The comparison with Brighton and Brentford's data-heavy approach was put to them, but Norwich think they do things somewhat differently to the pair of them.
My apologies squire, but despite repeated exhortations to the assembled crew, so far there's only been you, me, Bure and Bengaluru to make the (massive) effort required to put one of these tomes together. So when a new hat appeared in the ring this morning, I grabbed it like a duck to water (?) You'll be next, and by then hopefully a queue will be forming......
It certainly takes an immense amount of time and many sleepless nights to create MDT's. I will gladly accept new faces taking on this responsibility. Happy New Year to all
I admit to sometimes being mischievous, but by no means all the time! Wishing you and everyone on here all the best for 2021.
I would be more than happy to sit the next one out , nobody seems to have a great deal of confidence in you Skipper
Actually, canario, I don't ever think in terms of "proving" a point. What I believe is that knowledge and understanding are most effectively furthered through constantly subjecting opinions (mine just as much as anyone else's) to criticism. This is why I often "Like" posts that look critically at mine, e.g. your post above, or DHCanary's well-argued defence of lockdowns on the Covid thread (compare my reason for "Liking" a post to Mike, Cromer and others, who frequently give Likes to posts simply because they are critical of me ). I appreciate that this can give rise to the impression that I'm simply perverse, because when challenged, I counter with a further argument (often to Rob's or Rick's exasperation). I also appreciate that my focussing on points where you and I, for example, disagree, can give rise to the impression that I don't agree with you about anything -- e.g. that "we've made massive [progress] as a club over the last three years". In point of fact, I have e.g. been an advocate of the Director of Football/head coach set up long before our club introduced it, an admirer of German football long before DF's appointment, and a long time supporter of our owners and the self-sustaining model. There's really only one major bone of contention as far as I'm concerned, namely my belief that we didn't do the best we could last season, even taking the injuries into account, and my concern that, for all the lessons that have been learned, the most crucial ones have not -- with implications for next season if we succeed in getting promoted again. People shouldn't read my posts as expressions of my opinion; they are invitations to produce reasons for or against the subject opinion, whatever it is. Far from being Bure's "know-all", I am by nature a sceptic -- not least when it comes to the certainty that football fans almost universally have in the rightness of their own opinions!
But absolutely nothing to fear from contributing - the more the merrier, as DD said yesterday. A happy new year to everyone on the forum and a warm welcome to any 'lurkers' who would like to add to the mix
Barnsley have announced they have 4 players out of tomorrow's game with COVID (or isolating because of cases). Their captain (and ever-present midfielder) Mowatt is included, as well as Chaplin (forward, 21 appearances), Miller (forward, 5 appearances) and Collins (sub goalkeeper).
Not necessarily, as Barnsley benefitted from a host of positive COVID-19 tests in the Rotherham squad in midweek as they secured a 2-1 away victory in Yorkshire.
