Re. Vrançic. I am old enough to remember when saying 'He covered every blade of grass' was the highest compliment a TV commentator could give to a footballer. Never mind if he didn't do anything interesting or creative or significant - at least he covered every blade of grass. For me, Vrançic is the opposite of this. A player who can change a game in a moment because he has a level of class that few players have.
I don't think we can underestimate what a big win that is. We won whilst not playing well for 80+ minutes and avoided losing back to back games. Credit to Farke for making the changes...I've been critical of him for his lack of tactical flexibility and making changes too late, but looks like he got it spot on today. That's why he's a football manager and I play football manager.
He's kind of the very opposite of Stieps, who is totally unpredictable, which makes him very hard to play against. Mario at his best is precise, slide-rule precise.
Look at what you were all saying up until Martin scored. The game was exactly as I predicted -- until the unpredictable happened!
I hope this puts to bed the idea that Vrançic can't possibly play for 90 minutes because he is (gasp!) over 30. As Wes showed, if you have class, you can often last much longer than the players whose game depends on power and physical strength.
Mario was the difference today. The nutmeg through ball to set up Josh's goal was perfectly weighted. There were moments earlier when he made telling passes but the packed defence did enough. They almost got cocky after their goal and Mario exploited the slightest space to turn a loss into a win.
The other key result today was Watford losing at home to Cardiff. They are the main competition along with Bournemouth and they're now 4 points behind and down to 7th.
Every regular poster on here knows of my admiration for Mario. I am not about to chastise others, but watch the guy, notice his class. A good night for us all. Crack open another bottle
Just watched the Sky Sports video of the match. Stiepermann’s clearance on the line showed great conviction. Vrancic was at his creative best and eclipsed Buendia for his guile and composure. Really thought we were beaten again by a team in the bottom 3 echos of Derby game. Still have at least 9 injured.
