Well, this game certainly proved how far we are off the PL. Credit to the players for not letting their heads go down and they are working hard to make Wagner's tactics work, but today they met a team who are well experienced in those tactics and it showed. This convinced me that we are not ready for promotion and the rebuild will have to go on, probably without Pukki. I still like what Wagner is doing, but it needs more time than we have left.
That game epitomised everything that has been wrong for us the past 2 seasons - at least Wagner now knows what he's got to work on
Well, as we all recognise, the dream of a long unbeaten run and snatching second place is over. Maybe that's no bad thing. This is going to be a long rebuild, if we can indeed rebuild. A comparison between Burnley's recruitment and ours under Webber is looking rather damning. But things can turn quickly in football. Burnley are clearly a cut above everyone in this division and we have a run of much easier games ahead, at least in theory.
Burnley were the best team to go down last season with us & Watford. Wouldn't fancy playing Watford in the play offs either
The rebuild has to be practical rather than taking big risks on expensive players who fail to buy into the club. More South American acquisitions like Buendia and Núñez for reasonable fees rather than lashing out £8-10m on players. Bringing on our own young players like Rowe, Springett and Kamara is another source, as well as recruiting promising young players from lower leagues.
It's looking more and more as if hiring Buendia and Pukki was just luck and Webber really isn't very good at this recruitment lark.
As if to add insult to injury we have been charged by the FA for not controlling our players when the blatant penalty was turned away. The fact that our players pretty peacefully contested the decision rubs even more salt in the wound. Another fine example of refereeing…I think not
The football league have even confirmed that it was handball and still we get charged for protesting a clear error
Arsenal & Man City have been charged with failing to control their players in Wednesday night's top of the table clash - wonder how much they'll get get fined!
