    KIO’s not606 Match Preview

Tomorrow Norwich City welcome newly relegated Sunderland to Carrow Road in Round 2 of the SkyBet EF Championship season. The Canaries got off to a promising start last Saturday with a creditable draw against their proverbial ‘bogey’ team Fulham at Craven Cottage. After conceding an unfortunate own goal by Club Captain Russell Martin in the first half, Daniel Farke’s side rallied in the second period and Nelson Oliveira’s 88th minute leveler was no more than they deserved. As the game entered the final stages City’s two substitutes combined with the evergreen Wes Hoolahan chipping a delightful ball through to the Portuguese who calmly brought the ball down on his chest before sweeping it past David Button in the Fulham goal.

Nelson Oliveira foolishly removes his shirt to make a point

Oliveira, obviously upset at being left out of the starting line up, sprinted toward his Head Coach with his shirt held aloft pointing to the name on the back. It was a stupid and naive thing to do and although the Canaries chief brushed it off at the time, it became evidently clear afterwards that he was less than happy about the whole situation.
Oliveira was left out altogether for Norwich’s midweek home victory over Swindon Town in the Carabao Cup 1st Round and one can only surmise that it was punishment for his outburst against the Cottagers.

City come from behind to earn a well deserved draw at Craven Cottage

Sunderland had kicked off their campaign on the Friday evening prior to City’s trip to West London when they entertained Derby County at The Stadium of Light. After going behind to Bradley Johnson’s 11th minute opener it was another former City man that leveled the scores for the Black Cats just before halftime. Lewis Grabban fired homed a 42nd minute penalty after another ex Canary Jacob Butterfield had handled the ball in the box.

Lewis Grabban on target from the spot against Derby

Both sides had chances to take all three points with Grabban hitting the woodwork from 18 yards and yet another ex Norwich player Chris Martin firing over for Derby.
Subsequently both sides will be looking for their first 3 points of the season on Sunday and with both clubs having a major overhaul of players and coaching staff in the summer, this really is going to be a hard one to call.

    • The Canaries have lost just once in their 11 home league games against the Black Cats (W7 D3). However, that loss came in their most recent meeting with Sunderland.
    • Indeed, the north-east club picked up all three points in April 2016, only their third league victory away to Norwich in 23 attempts.
    • Since the start of last season, no player has provided more open play assists than Norwich's Wes Hoolahan (10, level with Sone Aluko and Tommy Smith).
    • Sunderland have won only two of their last 22 league games (D5 L15), although both wins came on the road - 2-0 v Hull in May and 4-0 v Crystal Palace in February.
    • The Canaries have lost only once in their last 12 home Championship matches, winning eight and drawing three.
    • This will be Sunderland's first away game in the second tier since May 2007 where they beat Luton Town (5-0). Indeed, the Black Cats have won eight of their last 10 on the road in the Championship (D1 L1).

    Daniel Farke previews tomorrow's game
    https://www.canaries.co.uk/News/

“When we look at our first league games, with Fulham, Sunderland, QPR and Aston Villa we know that is quite a hard start.”

“Sunderland is a relegated team, who will want to go back to the Premier League, and they have very good individual players. It is another type to Fulham; more about robust defending and playing a little bit more with long balls and relying on individual quality. It is going to be hard work for us. Simon Grayson is known as a coach who is able to defend very well, to get his sides very compact. It won’t be easy to create chances. But this is our first home game in the league.”

“There is no book you can read where it says what is better, defending the space or man to man marking. There are advantages and disadvantages. We have our style, more to defend the space, but it is always about being aggressive and having the will to attack the ball. We have watched the television pictures again from Swindon and we have worked on this topic in training, we have to improve it. There were big problems in this area last season. The guys know we have to improve.”
“Our idea is to defend a little bit more in the space, but with high responsibility in your area of the pitch. If we are in a defending position we have to make the first move, in comparison to the opponent. When one guy falls asleep in man to man situations then it is perhaps clearer but it is the same principle. If one or two guys are not awake, not hungry then you will concede.”

Daniel Farke on Alex Pritchard's injury and the last word on Nelsonn Oliveira

"They [Sunderland] defend robustly and it will be hard work for us. We've been working on defending from set-pieces this week, the guys know they have to improve that."

"We have such a good attitude and atmosphere in the whole group, that's our real strength; we have such a wonderful group of players. Steven Naismith asked to play and train with the Under-23s because of his suspension.”

"I like that attitude. Each and every player, and every staff member, has to be thankful to work for this club. It's a great honour to work for Norwich City.”

"You have to have that honour in mind each and every day. You only have success when you work with a special attitude and style.

"I am here to bring a certain working attitude, style and hopefully success."

    ……….. and on Nelson Oliveira:

“For sure, Nelson knows he made a mistake. He apologised in front of the group and now for me the topic is finished, he has to prove it on the pitch and in the dressing room but for me it is finished.”

Black Cats boss Simon Grayson gives his thoughts

“We need to build on the two results we have had so far, and keep going along in a positive manner.”

“We’re in a good state of mind at the moment, given the way that we’ve played and the results we have had.”

“I think they [Norwich] probably underachieved last year with the parachute payments they received and the Premier League players they have got.”

“We’re going to go there and respect the opposition, but ultimately to do whatever is required to get a good result.”

“There is a hardcore of British players that we know about and that were at Norwich last year, but certainly new players have come in.”

“Against Fulham last weekend, he [Farke] started with three centre-backs, changed at half-time, and then went to a back four on Tuesday night in the cup against Swindon Town.”

“So we’re a little bit in the dark about what system he will play, but really we need to concentrate on what we need to do.”

City lift the Milk Cup in 1985 - L to R Chris Woods, Dave Watson, Paul Haylock and Steve Bruce

The most notable encounter (at least for Norwich City fans), was in 1985 at Wembley Stadium where Norwich lifted the Milk (League) Cup beating Sunderland in the final by a solitary goal. In truth it was a rather dour affair for the neutral with the only real highlights being Asa Hartford's deflected goal for City and Clive Walker's missed penalty for Sunderland.

They have also won the FA Cup twice (1937 and 1973) and been runners-up twice (1913 and 1992), as well as winning the FA Community Shield in 1936 and being finalists the following year. Sunderland have also been Football League Cup finalists in 1985 and 2014.

Sunderland won their first FA Cup in 1937 with a 3–1 victory over Preston North End and remained in the top league for 68 successive seasons until they were relegated for the first time in 1958.

Norwich City with the 'Friendship Trophy' after a 2-1 victory at Roker Park in December 1990

Ever since the 1985 Milk Cup final Norwich and Sunderland have contested the 'Friendship Trophy' in each season they have been in the same division, this is to commemorate the goodwill shown between the two sets of supporters that day. It was unusual because it was a time when football hooliganism was rife, indeed Norwich were to be denied entry into European competition because of events that unfolded in the European Cup final later that same year at the Heysel Stadium. Liverpool's notorious fans ran riot which led to 39 people losing their lives, subsequently English clubs were banned from playing in Europe for five years with Liverpool being excluded for six.

Well win 1-2 in my opinion. Im very optimistic this season if we can bring a double figure a season striker in.
We have a solid central midfield with lots of options of who we could start. Our only downside is our defence but the 2 Everton loanees are begining to show why Everton have just given them both new contracts.

Goodluck for the season after tomorow lads.

Nice thread. Nice to see a board with a few involved. Would be happy enough with a draw tomorrow and have been quietly impressed with our side. Good luck for the season (after tomorrow of course) :)

I prefer to go to the Bell for breakfast and a better choice of beer, as the QoI has a very limited choice of real ales on offer on match days.
I wasn't aware that there going to be body searches, just only allowed a small rucksack/bag.

Whole club is on the change for us really. Debt containment means we've spent less than £2m on 7 players with 14 players leaving and more to go. We've even been laying off none playing staff on every level from program sellers to the kit man. The club is still in the stripping back stage of it's transition. Think you'll win it comfortably personally. We've got a long and painful road ahead of us.

There was a small group of Sunderland fans singing songs about an illegitimately born Geordie with Aids this afternoon in a packed train carriage with families from Liverpool street to Norwich.
They even abused a young kid at Colchester with learning difficulties, classless scum.
