No one player was especially bad but just not enough were that good either. I do worry about Pukki's ability to score goals from a range of situations, it seems to be more of the running off the shoulder of the defenders. It all seems a little predictable at times and we don't have the Emi to supply the right defence-splitting passes anymore. The biggest disappointment for me today was Gilmour. He made a good few errors during the game that he needs to look at.
This is actually a good example of misleading xG - it seems to be awarding Gibson, Hanley and Idah a combined 1.2 expected goals, but I think only one of them could have scored from one chance… It also gives that Cantwell speculative lob from the touchline a 9% chance versus Salah’s clear sight of half the goal from eighteen yards which he put away a 7% chance. It does, however, show how clinical Liverpool were. They did not actually create that much, but they constantly disrupted us and when they got those chances, goal.
Yeah, Sargent looked like he played in the PL before. I hope that's a sign of things to come. As you said, the new players did pretty well.
I was going to dig around for the concede first and don't register any points stat but I'll just cry I just hope this ridiculous run In inspires some of the new guys who must be pinching themselves to be playing all these World class clubs rather than sap everyone's confidence. To be fair we looked pretty good until they scored , after that we were never in it. Never mind
I thought Gilmour looked dreadfully nervous, but showed enough class at times to make me think he just needs a bit more time to settle. Certainly caught too many times on the ball and sold some passes short though.
I actually thought we also looked pretty good the first fifteen of the second half. Once the second went in though…
Perhaps he is feeling the pressure, he's getting a lot of positive raves from the friendly matches and the expectancy of him is pretty high for one so young.
Today wasn't unexpected given our disrupted preparation and recent signings. Personally, I thought we looked pretty good for passages of the game and the subs made a noticeable impact when they came on. Bring it!
I thought we played some nice one touch passing through their press in the first off, we understandably tired as the game went on. As others have said this result was fully expected given their class and our disrupted pre season. Our season won’t be defined by games like this, we did ok, it’s going to take a few games to get up to speed.
Yes, the second didn't go in until the 65th minute and we were still in it until then, We had 51% of the possession in the first half and it finished 50%/50% in the end. There were some positives that the score line didn't reflect.
Don't buy Scotch, I would only drink it. Love Laphroiag. On the match, Liverpool will beat several teams by three goals or more.
No alarm bells for me after that result. Some thoughts though... The formation left us looking a little thin up top in attack. Rarely more than one yellow shirt in the box for a cross. Rashica took a few mins to find his feet but then looked really positive. Best game i've seen from Giannoulis and Rupp looked solid. To my eye, Lees-Melou looked fairly quiet and struggled to find his role in the first half. Would loved to have seen Tzolis come on for 20 in the second half.
I agree with you. I know logic tells us that the idea of bogey teams is a superstition, but we just seem doomed against Liverpool. As you say, even if we match them during a game (as we did in the first half), they always seem to get that slice of luck against us. Them, and Fulham (who obviously are nowhere near Liverpool's level). I also suspect that the big 3 (Man City, Liverpool, Chelsea) are going to drop very few points this season against the bottom half teams (and possibly big 4, with Man Utd also included). We could get tonked at Man City (I think it was 5-0 last time?), but I hold out more hope of something there than I did from the Liverpool game.
