Spartans seal Senior Cup spot. This season's Techflow Group Northumberland Senior Cup Final will be contested between Newcastle Reserves and Blyth Spartans, after the Northern Premier League side overcame Ashington at the second attempt on Tuesday. Following a 2-2 draw at Woodhorn Lane last month, the sides met again at Croft Park in front of another 600+ crowd, Blyth eliminating the reigning cup holders 3-2. The final will be staged at SJP on Tuesday April 22nd with a 7pm kick-off and is played to a finish on the night - via extra time and penalties if required. Since lifting the trophy after beating Blue Star in 1994, Spartans have lost nine times in the final - six of them against Newcastle - the most recent coming in 2011. And their task this year is made no easier by the scheduling of a home league game on Easter Monday - just over 24 hours ahead of their visit to Gallowgate. More thoughtlessness by the powers that be, wouldn't you think they'd be a bit more considerate? I might go along to support the Spartans. I remember when I was a kid my Pa always thought highly of them.
