I sit in the lower west with my 70 plus year old mother and my 8 year old son, she likes the odd irrational yell at the ref and he and I love a bit of a sing, occasionally adapting the words for my son and other kids around us. Nobody has ever told any of us to be quiet.
People choose the stand they sit in for various reasons and the reasons I've not been in the Upper North with my kid or mum is quite clearly stated by others in some of the posts above.
JA doesn't need to bother answering but have any of you ever really been shhhhh-ed for singing? Consider the question carefully? If you were the prepubescent little boy who I told to shut up or go away for talking about "shanking the Millwall c***s" over and over and inventing firms, you weren't singing you were being unpleasant around my family. If you were the pathetic drunk thug specimen who told me to f*** off when I asked him to sit down so my mum who doesnt stand very easily and my son who doesn't stand very tall could see and then offered to fight me when I asked for the help of a steward, then you weren't singing you were denying my family a view of the match they'd paid to see. If you were the racist scumbag who I told to shut up when you abused all the oppositions black players but cheered our own to the rooftops then you weren't singing you were being a racist scumbag.
I get very frustrated by how quiet it is in the West Stand but I wonder how often anyone has ever been asked to "Pipe down old chap" by the fellas in the posh seats, really?
There are big gaps in the crowd at the moment- that doesn't help the atmosphere. I've posted before about singing stuff that is more accessible to all but been shot down in flames on the old 606.
They main stand will always be quieter than behind the goals but we made enough noise when Robbo brought us back to 3-3 against united or when Jason scored the winner against Liverpool or Lisbie scored his career hat trick. Bring back the good times and fill the stands.
On the original point of this thread Charlton came so far, further and faster than any other club, I hope we're not slipping back to darker times.

Great post Leaburns Legs, [even if your username is perhaps the most homo-erotic on here <laugh> <ok> ]

To be honest its a pretty ridiculous argument when someone posts that they tried getting songs started in the West/East stands and were told to shh. Personally, I love a good old sing song, hence why I have a season ticket in the Covered End. If you want to sing, then get a ticket up there, if not then don't complain that nobody was singing when you chose to sit in the East or West.

It might be homo erotic but it alliterates, and for those of you who go back that far it's an homage to a great 606 poster, Addick, Ska and Two-tone blogger and cartoonist, Leaburns Shins- a true pioneer of the medium.
