Talk about coincidence!

Watching the old tv series "Mike Bassett Manager" tonight with my youngest. Final episode: Mike tells his wife that she should have been Mrs Norman Hunter.

Took my breath away & almost shed a tear.

It's tragic that Norman did not live to see Leeds return to the Premier League.

I saw him play many times over the years and was always struck by the fact that he was hard, for sure, but also skillful, particularly in terms of his positioning. Above all he had total commitment to the team - just the sort of steel that a successful side needs.

Some people (Leeds fans) have expressed concern over the naming of the South Stand for Norman Hunter.

There are very few others who can qualify as a hugely successful player and as an ambassador for the club for virtually all of his adult life.

The only other one that qualifies for me is Eddie Gray. Madeley and others that have been lost or still with us, e.g., Jack Charlton and Johnny Giles, didn't stay with the club after their playing days. Peter Lorimer is perhaps the next closest but does not quite make it for me. Billy Bremner was in a class of his own, hence the statue.

I disagree regarding your comments about Giles and Charlton. Giles certainly deserves to be held in high regard for his many years at the club and without him maybe Billy wouldn't have been as effective. Giles is also still mates with the special Revie few and does meet up and go to ER on occasions. His other media commitments also hindered him becoming some sort of ambassador for the club. He could have been at the club longer if he had been made manager after being recommended by Sir Don, but he wasn't because Billy wanted the job and we know who took over eventually. As for Jack, he only played for one club and IMO should be treated with the upmost respect by us and the club when he eventually passes away. Paul Reaney is another player who has done a lot of work for the club after finishing as a player. <ok>
