As I said I didn't realise that. If I'd known we had that talent already working for the club, I'd have been championing them to be the management team

I’m not sure I could ever get behind the idea of Butcher and Dyer. They seem like two different players from two very different eras, and I’m not even sure they have any professional relationship let alone one sufficient enough to forge a team in charge if a football club. Dyer probably earned more in a month at his peak than Butcher did in his career! Neither has any notable managerial track record, let alone a bad one. I just don’t see it beyond affection for two of our best players. Not that we had much of Dyer; he was off to the big time almost straight away when Newcastle was basically Ipswich towns best players and manager!

On that basis I suppose neither of you would have given Alf Ramsey, Bobby Robson or George Burley a job, then.

    You definitely weren’t.

    Villa failed.
    Blackburn failed.
    Wolves failed.
    Stoke failed.

AND a Norwich hero albeit a long time ago and a has been.

Out on his own as the stupidest appointment Town have ever made.

How does that compare to Butchers and Dyers achievements then?

    Coventry - success
    Sunderland - success
    Motherwell - success
    Sydney- success
    Brentford- success
    Inverness - success
    Hibs - success
    Newport County - success

    And then

    Ipswich under 18s - success
    Ipswich under 23s - success

Now you've put it so succinctly, I see what you mean

If it was Butcher alone, sure, they’re comparable. But Dyer has just as much experience as Gerrard had going into the Rangers job, or Alf Ramsey.

IMO it’s worth a punt to see if he can become a legendary manager. Paul Lambert was never going to be that. I’m not saying it with hindsight, my comments when he was appointed were exactly the same and still published on this forum.
