I know he's not prolific, but I'm a huge fan of Josh Sargent. I'd love us to find a player like him for next season.

Keep seeing posters on this forum using the term "lifting".

I'm confused. Sounds like a positive thing but it seems to be used in a negative context.

Can anyone explain that to me? I live in a backwater in Australia and I'm not up to date with slang.

Didn't know where to post this. So I put in the non sunderland games thread as it definitely isn't related to a sunderland match.

Now I'm going to ask a few NE based relatives where it originated <doh>

Is it an old one then?

Surprised, I've never heard or seen it until the last few months.

We never had it in Durham, up to the 70's, and I've only really noticed it at games, and forums, over the last 20 years tbh. I'd say it's more Geordie than anything, lots of their slang comes from the World Wars and others from Gypsy slang.

I'll find out but would guess it comes from WW2 and how a corpse, bloated and covered in flies, would be 'lifting off the ground'.

Can't get my head around it, I've absolutely never heard it before, on this forum too, and now I keep seeing it.

Presumed it was something new. Just one of those weird things I guess.

Southampton playing a back 5 is strange. Not sure it suits their players at all.

Yes I know they will now win 4-0.

Surely this can't be worse than the Norwich v Leeds game.

Triantis on the bench again, and Mayenda once again not part of the matchday squad for Hibs.
Both of these loans have been a disaster. The fact Mayenda used to sit on the bench for us, but cant even make the bench for Hibs is a big concern.

Amad getting a start, tough test for him. Hope he does well but also wouldn’t mind a stinker and cut price sale to us in the summer
