So, these top PL clubs have unbelievable squads that they can rotate any player in any position at the drop of a hat and not notice any difference. They have 7 subs from 9 and a zillion young lads out on loan.........but the England lot are flogged to death and absolutely ****ed at the end of the season? How does that work exactly?

Been saying for months Southgate wasn't up to the job, he's never had a plan B, the team often look like they haven't even got a plan A.
Hungary played them superbly, the longer the game went on the easier it got for them, this close to the World Cup there's no way the useless and inept FA will get rid of their useless and inept manager....a match made in heaven for both parties...pathetic.

That looks like the high water mark. England were dreadful several times during those finals as well tbh. We could easily have been beaten well before the final and had no complaints.

We've got to be more positive and make things happen rather than waiting for chances to present themselves.

Awful team selection: Philips after a couple of games back after long term injury, James (over A-Arnold) when he isn't even the best full back at his club, no Grealish after he sparked life into the team in the last 2 games, no thought to starting Abraham with Kane 'in the hole', need I go on?

No point settling for second place before a ball has been kicked, he had the final in his grip and reverted back into his shell and blew it, nobody can be happy by just getting to the final and then giving it away surely.

I think he’s decent enough he’s done better then any other manager has done with England for aslong as I can remember.
We should have won the final but we never, he’s used these games to have a look at other players. Who else would do a better job tho?

That's tournament football though. I'm no big fan of England or Southgate, but the abuse he's getting is a joke. People pointing out that England "struggled to get past Croatia" or "were lucky that Germany are rebuilding" as some sort of narrative to say that England got to the Euro Final or the WC semi in spite of Southgate's management. It's embarrassing really.

We'll have to agree to disagree Smithy regards the England Manager.
I just find him dour and uninspiring both in front of the cameras and on the touchline.
Who else could do the job...no idea but that's what the top guys at the FA are paid to do and not very successfully imo.

There must be loads of managers around the world who have a lot better CV than Southgate had (Middlesbrough 15 years ago and England U-21's for a couple of years, thats it). He's done well but I still couldnt help feeling that he is holding this team back at times. Last night is a symptom of that. The last 2 tournaments, on paper we did well, but on the pitch we looked iffy. Still think he deserves Qatar (and I mean in a good way) and even if we fair averagely in that he deserves a crack at the next qualifications. If we are stagnating by then, get rid.

Watching some of that last night brought home how poor technically some of our players still are compared to the Hungarians. A few are one-footed and can’t look after the ball in tight situations. The ball control and passing from Hungary was excellent.

Even when England caused them problems and got in space it was often just from our players being quicker.

I’d like to see us sacrifice a bit of the Premier League-style pace and physicality with players with excellent technique and possession abilities. Gallagher, for instance, looked great in the PL but way below international level, technique-wise.

Admittedly I've seen very little of these friendlies, but players such as Ramsdale, Gallagher, Bowen, Abraham etc are a distance below international level

Had Southgate played his strongest team in all 4 games I wager the results would have been different
