True, but Shearer gave him one before that. The point was that you can't solely blame Wise for Ranger being at the club.

I don't just mean in terms like that, but when he continued to get first team chances despite being largely crap, both in the Championship and last season. If he'd been made to work harder for chances earlier on perhaps this could have been sorted. Who knows?

    I doubt it.

Southampton got rid of him because he was such a tosser, time for us to do the same.

Being let go by the saints should have been the wake up call that he needed to sort himself out, but it seems to have absolutely no effect.

I'm not advocating keeping him on, just wondering what could have been had people been tougher on him earlier on.

Ultimately what's happened is almost all his responsiblity, but I think that when clubs take these young guys out of the normal upbringing, and normal line of education, and treat them like princes for most of their youth, then they have to take some of the blame when things go wrong.
I'd like to see clubs force an education policy or something - Not just through secondary school, but further than that. A full college level course would probably take too much time away from their training, but there is definitely time for some kind of further education.

I've read comments from managers and coaches who have said in the past that too many kids who sign a first professional contract often think "That's it. I've done it!" when in fact this is the period where they have to put in more effort.

Despite reminders from the club and face to face chats to instill this requirement, many simply won't listen and Nile sounds like one of these.

He has the potential but mentally is incapable of adapting to a professional manner.
