OMG that is ridiculous but I know you are right, I have heard of things like that going on. Streamlining the club, tightening up procedures and modernising are all good things but this is where business and football are different. There has to be some good will towards the players and the supporters, making a player buy stuff to give to charity is petty. I know the players can afford to buy it but really would anyone of us expect them to do that.
this forum attracts more idiots than any other ! All the "moaning minnies" who used to post unsavoury comments about NP and his style of play. Now coming out and saying ,how right and good he was ! ! leves me speechless. Grow a spine ,some of you posters and don't hide behind pseudonyms. All I say is give the Allams a chance, after all, who else have we got sitting on the sidelines waiting to throw money at us?
This was an interesting, reasoned thread before you posted that. Well done, couldn't have a better example of trolling. Is your comment about this board attracting idiots supposed to be ironic?
So lets get this right. We had a club that was insolvent to the tune of around 40 million, owing the public purse a fortune, mortgaged everything that it could, lost 50k on every home match played. When it was in the PL could never attract players. It was paying and still is paying tens of thousands to players who dont even play. If a Senior footballer came to me and asked for a free football or shirt, I would tell him to do one, its insane, he will bask in the glory of a charitable gift and still pocket more each week than some workers get paid for a year. Scouts not getting freebies...Southampton stopped giving freebies to Matt LeTiss and everyother ex player, scout, manager who they did not invite to the ground. Flying to matches is as subject to delay as any motorway travel. These players are not being asked to come down here in a double decker bus for heavens sake. You lot cannot have it both ways, you want a solvent club, you want reasonable ticket pricing, you want a decent manager, a capable squad and the chance of celebration. It all comes at a price and whoever had saved the club, no matter have much personal wealth, these changes would have been made. Does anyone think that a player went across to either of the Allams and said "hey can the club give away a signed shirt" I bet that less than a third of the team have ever said anymore than "good morning" to either of them. Its likely that when he was here Adam Pearson had very little to do with the squad and Phil Brown went weeks without speaking to individual players in conversation. This isnt some pally knitting circle, its a business in the sports sector and I for one would rather we had a board who see the need for change than not.
100% agree. Aaron Mc seems to get no end of requests for signed stuff, and judging by some of the retweets he does being thanked, I think he does what he can. Seeing as he's basically had 3 holidays since the end of the season, I suspect he doesn't feel in the slightest hard done by, in fact, Im gonna ask him. It's not like the Allams are anti charity either...
Anyone can see that giving away merchandise to every Tom, Dick and Harry is poor business. It's just my opinion that when the club were asked to donate a couple of balls and a shirt for auction for the teenage cancer trust and they said no it's pretty poor. It would have cost about £40 for what the club pay for those items at cost.
After reading some of these even Ken Bates would be proud of some of them please log in to view this image
Couldn't agree more - factor in getting to and from the airports and cannot see that the journey time would be any different! on the topic of the Allam's economies - thought i read something about them being shocked that there were something like 30+ company cars in use? did I imagine this?
It isn't - flew down to Southampton (airport at nearby Eastleigh) twice in our CCC days from Leeds Bradford - 55 min flight but an hour and a half to get to pigging LBA from Hull. Drove down last time 4 hours or so.
Nup, that was Maguire's desperate attempt to justify his own six-figure salary. Naturally in the huge splash in the HDM where he pointed out the ridiculousness of the situation he failed to mention poaching former colleagues from Stockport County, offering them hugelly inflated salaries compared to equivalent existing roles at City and - here's the best bit - giving them company cars! It's like a bad sitcom and naturally his attempted justification failed.
It's not like we're sending them down on the Megabus or national express. They'll be on an executive coach with comfy seats, big Tvs with Sky no doubt, possibly a few beds and space to move about. Like Sutton and Onceatiger have said the time spent getting to and from the airport up north and down south alongside the flight time would make the time spent travelling fairly similar. The players are pampered enough as it is, I can see some of the Allams cost cutting measures may be viewed as extreme/unnecessary, but the domestic flights isn't part of that in my opinion.
The new section of dual carriageway between Leicester and Newark A46 shaves off 15-20 mins from the M1-M18 journey. On Saturday I will leave home at 8am and will be at the Humber Bridge in 3 hours 20 mins. I do drive to the German speed limit. 50mph on single 84mph on dual and As fast as I can get away with on motorways. 56mpg!!!
Not quite accurate Stavros ... you know the writing is on the wall when your owners invite another manager to the first (home) leg of your play-off semi-final .... Mandaric invited Sousa knowing that him in charge was a more attractive proposition for the Thais in terms of Paulo's internatioal reputation as a player etc ... Nigel could see which way the wind was blowing so hoisted his sail ... god that's a good metaphor 'tho I say it myself ...
But that's exactly the problem - other clubs don't do all this petty penny pinching and it works fine for them- we are the exception and it should ring alarm bells for everyone that there's something wrong with that. Some of the things they've done will have saved the club so little money that the people they've pissed off probably costs them more in the long term.
FosseFilberto, a bit of crystal ball gazing if you'd like to have a go at it! If big Nigel doesn't quite get you guys to where the owners think you should be (though I think you'll be top 6 all season), firstly, how long do you think he'll last before they sack him? Secondly, assuming the first point takes place at some point in the near future, what odds on a third return by Nigel? I think he has a genuine love for your club and didn't want to be anywhere else in the first place - especially us! Saying that (until the very end) he did a good professional job whilst he was with us! Cheers
Lincoln - as someone who felt that we sacked both Sousa and Sven far too early - for me you give a guy two years and stcik by him - my fear is that our Thai owners will knee-jerk by Christmas if we are not right up there .. I hope you are right and I'm quite excited by the acquisition of Vardy - know he's unproven at the level but it his potential that excites; give me a young hungry kid with an eye for goal and a point to prove anytime. Whilst I know he's not everybody's cup of tea, I really hope we can persuade Emile Heskey to come and join us (and that he can stay fit) - he won't be our top scorer that's for sure but would be great for Vardy to play alongside and in terms of hold-up / link up play generally - one of our problem last season was that Beckford is pretty inaffective anywhere but directly in front of goal.
Well you are so far wrong it's beyond me. It's called Turnaround management. You call it penny pinching but in the real world it's called becoming solvent. In order to run the business effectively all of the spend has to be reviewed. I work in the insolvency industry, disposing of the assets of failed businesses. I see over spending everyday. Businesses who spend money on things that they cannot afford and can do without. Administrators who find that the company spends more on coffee for the staff than on training. Why did the consortium fold, because this club was not run on sound business principles...well the news is that it is now!
You've just told me a load of stuff about your job and insolvcent businesses that aren't football clubs. All irrelevant.
Portsmouth twice. Southampton once. Businesses who spent money on things they could not afford and did not need.
