I wish.

No, just asking the question. Having read it through, I probably could have phrased it better. Basically, has any team been promoted from the 3rd to the 1st division and then won it - taking the minimum 3 seasons to do it in..? Do you know the answer..? Is there such an English team..?

It would seem to me that finishing runners-up would be more in keeping with our recent history...

I mean, it's not ideal, but it'd be acceptable for a first season...

Cheers,
RLT

No, I took it as tongue in cheek, but I've also noted your liking for a decent cognac. As for the question, I doubt it. Northampton did that 4-3-2-1-2-3-4 thing in successive seasons which is worthy of note in its own way, I suppose. Forest went up and won the Championship the next year under Clough, but hadn't been promoted from Division 3 just prior to this feat. United went up in 74/75 and came close to the double the next year, but ended up 3rd in the league and lost the Cup Final to a bunch of rank outsiders from down South. On reflection, Forest's amazing rise in the late 70's is the nearest anyone has got to achieving successive championships. Being runners up again next year wouldn't be a bad result. You can hear Nigel now telling everyone that he's "gutted" as Saints hadn't won the league.

The cognac doesn't have to be that decent, CH₂0. [ <- Gosh, see the trouble I went to there..? I've been trying to get this browser to support superscript and subscript, and your name is a good excuse to try. It didn't work again] ;)

Didn't Shankly win the 2nd division with Liverpool then win the div 1 title the following season?

There have been one or two clubs that have been promoted and then gone on to win the top league. Ipswich did it, under Alf Ramsey [hence he got the England job]. Ipswich also won the 3rd Division South [they were still North and South in those days] in 1956-57, which means they won 3 divisions in the space of 5 seasons. I believe this is the smallest time it has taken any English club to progress from 3rd to the Top division and win it.

1956-57 3rd Division South Division Champions
1960-61 2nd Division Champions
1961-62 1st Division Champions

Not bad going for a nothing club [according to one or two on here] ;)
