Think he was. Only his totals were a tad less. Perhaps his percentages were better [was this pre-Crossley day..?] or worse..?
Lol at myself I have believed for the past 15 years that Le Tiss was on the bench and wasn't brought on which is strange because I was really into Football back then. Must've been the youth 'drink 10 pints a night every night' part in me that made me think that. strange. lol And by the above statement I mean I am very into football now but between the Premier starting with the advent of the foreigners arriving, cheating leaping to unchartered territories, no contact allowed and money making footballers mercenarys I slowly lost any interest in football. Started again when Saints got in trouble in that last season in the championship So I'll try and backtrack and say Venables was a bad tactician for not taking the best penalty taker to the tournament. lol Hmmm. Feeling very silly now. he, he. Andy
Man enough to admit it though Andy...... not like me, I'm never wrong. If it's any consolation, about 50 million people thought he should have been on the bench that night!
50 million Saints Fans? All my mates who are Liverpool, ManU, Spurs (as well as Lincoln. lol) were the same as the rest of the country saying he was fat, lazy with no ambition. Liked too much being a small fish in a big pond etc. They still harp on about him being useless for England in the 9 games no matter how much I tell them he was played by Hoddle as a centre forward and Venables as a winger. Andy
Hmm, I thought he was usually well liked by the average supporter, who appreciated sublime skills, over running all over the park but creating sod all. IIRC, TV's Fantasy Football League show, with Baddiel and Skinner, actively campaigned to get MLT into the England side. Every so often they would bemoan the fact he had been left out of the squad AGAIN, and would have some sort of humourous sketch later on, lauding him and ridiculing the England manager.
I will always pity those who didn't see Tiss in his pomp. It was an honour to watch him sometimes and I loved the fact the Skinner and Baddiel (outside the Southampton family) also appreciated him and told the world.
Oh he was well liked by all I think for what he could do and the goals etc but the opinion I get from almost everybody (that actually watched games) was he was a luxury player, overweight and lazy. No-one I knew would agree with me he should play for England. They were all (just like the England Managers) obsessed with workhorses like Ince/Platt/Mcmanaman or blinded by Gazza's tears etc. I'll grant them Scholes was top draw though If I ask any ManYou fan they will say he was a brilliant player but only 50% the quality of Cantona
