Actually, the fact there wasn't an attack during the Euros shows the security wasn't ridiculous.

I'm not sure what you mean? There was a lot of security at the Euros so there was a good chance they could prevent anything big from happening.

Why? Do you think he did this in the name of Chridtianity, Sikhism, Buddhism?

Sad news, r.i.p to all those poor people. Main thing to fight terrorism (and it always has been) is don't let the terrorists win and keep going about your normal business and taking the same holidays you ever would. I remember in the 80's driving around Europe and being advised not to wear England football shirts as they were markers for the IRA, kept mine on regardless. My sister was cycling to work in London when the London bombings happened in 2005 and I was visiting my friend when Lee Rigby got stabbed and had no idea why every street central London was full of gun toting coppers, it never ends.

So why describe it as ridiculous? Appropriate to the current situation, effective, yes. But ridiculous? That suggests inappropriate sand over the top.

Might be a different in colloquialism, here in Australia ridiculous can be used to mean "A large amount". Not sure this is the thread to quibble on correct word usages though.

It can here but it tends to also refer to an unnecessary amount, which it could be thought you meant.

As you say not a thing to quibble about really. I think we can all agree on an appropriate word to describe the perpetrators of these acts.

I think his religion is irrelevant. Personally I don't judge people based on their religion, I consider it a non important part of who they are. It's not something that I ask people when I meet them or use to describe them. So I don't think it's right to use it as a stick to beat people.

That must be one of the most stupid posts I have read on here. Of course his religion is relevant, that is what drove him to do what he did. Do you think Muslims don't judge the Crusaders by the fact they were Christians, Catholics actually, because that was irrelevant? Maybe they should leave Protestants and the Church of England out of their attacks come to think of it.

His religion is completely relevant. It's a twisted version of that which is the cause of these attacks. I can't understand why you're bothered it's mentioned when it's clearly part of the problem, and part of the reason.

In any case, the main focus for now should be on thinking about so many killed in a manner which is almost impossible to stop again, and despite the horror of this attack, could have been much much worse if he'd packed the lorry with explosives.

These lone wolf attacks are impossible to predict or stop.. One nutter decides to kill as many people has possible and chooses the easiest method and it proves to be deadly.
We are becoming almost blasé about these things...Then the politicians come out with the usual stock response of 'shock' and 'outrage'.. Short of turning all democratic societies into police states I don't think there is a lot that can be done. And this is what the radicals want in order to turn people against themselves. Just after 9/11 a heard a US senator say that a positive of open western societies is the free movement of people, but it is also its biggest negative. Which just about sums it up..

So you think that this bloke had this idea all on his own, hired the lorry, got the weapons found in the lorry all without any others involved? It wasn't a lone wolf attack it was a planned operation put together by ruthless fanatics. Still, Sterling thinks his religion is irrelevant.

I'm sure the Beeb mentioned last night that the French fuzz were looking for an accomplice.

I'd bet he is a lone wolf...Because as someone has pointed out if the lorry was full of explosives the death toll could have been in the 000s. He had one gun (easy to come by in France|) and the rest of his weapons were fake.
I'm no terrorism expert but I'll good money that he was acting on his tod. Yes he had probably been planning it for a while, but that doesn't mean to say he was working with anyone..If I am incorrect, then fine..

Did you type that whilst sipping an organic soy latte, wearing fair trade hemp clothing and fanning yourself with the Guardian?

Stop trying to be ultra-liberal and realise people are dead because of his religion, that's by no means is a reason to discriminate against that religion or its followers but as it was quite clearly his motive for murdering people it is entirely relevant to the conversation.

The police did. He had been arrested in a bar brawl. As all good Muslims are.
