i was born and bred in Sunderland Co Durham, always will be a Durham lad, even when i came out of the Army i moved to Houghton i refused to write Tyne and Wear on my mail, mail never got lost, you don't have to bend to the will of ****ers, i never saw them ask the public if they wanted a name change, so **** em and they did hoover up all the grants for the metro which we paid half for but got nowt for years.
i think it comes from the saxon Saunderland as it's even called Sunderland in Essen https://goo.gl/maps/mszDZU8QwsA3MNiK8
The following is my understanding of the origins of the name and I can not remember where I got it from. --- Saundered land. It means divided land. This refered to the land north of the River being owned by St Peters Monastery, thus Monkwearmouth, while the land south of the river was owned by The Bishop of Durham, thus, Bishopwearmouth. So it was all owned by The Church, but divided btween the Monks and the Bishop.
Close. The Bishops of Durham didn’t get the land at Bishopwearmouth until AD 930. Before then the Monks at Monkwearmouth had some lands on the south bank of the Wear, which was split asunder from the main lands.
I always thought it was because of the river and the land being split by it, asunder. I didn’t know about the Saxon or church stuff. I’m gonna find out a bit more about it though, it’ll be interesting.
This is brilliant!!! The Mags will have to cheer on Mike Ashley while he pretends to take on the PL. You really couldn't make this all up
The whole issue is about whether the crown prince, Bin Salman, had anything to do with PIF. Buyers and sellers insisted that he is independent of PIF. It won’t go to court as the Premier league will just need to hand this over... https://www.pif.gov.sa/en/Pages/Boradmembers.aspx Under the chairmanship and guidance of HRH Prince Mohammad bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud, the Board is responsible for overseeing the long-term strategy, investment policy and performance of PIF. Case closed.
It's strange why the Premier League announced a decision when the prospective purchaser had already withdrawn the offer. Could they be paving the way for a successful appeal?
