Before anyone gets into too much of a tangle, keep in mind that this is an idea floated by a local coucilor, and a Lib Dem one at that. And, from his point of view it has worked. He has got his name in the papers. Then ask yourself if at this time when N/C airport is up against the wall financialy (becuase their isn't a lot of flying goin on), their priority should be changing their name at what I presume would be quite a financial outlay and for no obvious benefit. However, were any name change to be considered, might it not be more appropriate to use something that already exists, say Tyne and Wear. as appears in the address, or Northumbria, the title that the local police use and which has historical associations. But in any case, NOT YET. The Management of The Airport will have far more important priorities to concentrate on. Meanwhile the local Lib Dem Councillors can dip into their bag of daft ideas for another topic to provoke local mirth.
And? The Nissan site is good for the region. We don’t use it as a stick to beat Newcastle fans with, unlike your lot with Ponteland airport! not bothered what you think about Nissan.
I consider Nissan to be in Washington as it's on the Washington side of the A19. Not that my opinion matters but just saying.
That's factually now correct but most of us in Washington consider ourselves to be a stand alone town. Population of 70k and around 20 villages.
I know how you feel. I still think of Sunderland as being a part of the historic County Durham, Land of The Prince Bishops.
I once mistakenly believed Newcastle had tried to grab Nissan by claiming it as part of South Tyneside during a council boundary reshuffle a few years back, I don't know where I read that incorrectly... I hadn't realised Washington was within Sunderland boundaries as I always counted Washington as its own town.
There are people who will no doubt sympathise with you in --- Herrington Hetton Houghton Newbottle Penshaw Rainton Ryhope Silksworth and Warden Law It seems to be a secret Oath that all politicians have to take on being elected, local or national. 'If it aint broken, break it'.
I don't give a flying one what its called. I can and have flown from there on many occasions without giving a toss whether it has Sunderland in its name. Surely all this is irrelevant when it moves to Peterlee in 15 years time.
Whilst a name change would be funny, even if it's just to rile the unwashed it is a ****ty little airport mind and it's expensive. We have used Edinburgh and Leeds in the past and managed to get holidays miles cheaper than flying from Ponteland, and that includes petrol and an overnight stay in a Travelodge before flying out.
16 rotations a day, I think I counted the other day... A far cry from one airline I worked for there back in the early 0's that had 27 in the morning. 27 in the afternoon and another 20 at night. The budget for the Airport will be blown to shreds. A lot of my old colleagues were released when the pandemic started and fear it will be 2025/26 before a steady stream of airlines begin to recover.
