Colo and mike have got years left!.. neither have ever relied on pace so a few more years of perfectly timed tackles, offside trapping and simple passing shouldnt be a problem.

its steven taylor whos been hanging on by a fannys hair for 5 years.

Interesting quotes from @NatJacksonsport. Pearce unhappy. I hear #nufc have done the deal for £5m or so.

I think Pearce is entitled to feel disappointed about the sale, especially if he advised against it. Although I do feel we got them for a reasonable price, considering the clamour for Lascelles in particular. But this is actually quite a large outlay for us on development players. We rarely spend over a million on development players, so this is actually quite positive. Which makes a big change from our normal recruitment policy.

CB is definitely the most important position we need to fill now. There is no point in average tho. Not so bad off for numbers we just need real boss of a CB who is first name on the team sheet.

Is this not just Mike acknowledging the absurdity of the English market?

We'll never BUY English players for the first team, ready made, but he'll start picking off promising young stock with an eye on inflated values down the line.

They've pulled a fast one here based on the loaning back idea and it becomes an offer clubs like Forest can't refuse.

Lets face it, if these ever get close or indeed beak into the first team they'll be flogged at top whack – replaced from France and pocket the change!

I'm not necessarily slating the strategy but it's only "long-term" until cashing in time, surely? Sadly we've had to realise this kind of business isn't about football for NUFC...

Whereas its a shame for Pearce (legend), its good to see us making a move for two highly promising young players. Darlow in particular is well thought of. He was linked with all the top clubs, though I suspect there may have been a foreign quota edge to this scenario. Hopefully they'll continue to do well and we can boost the squad come 2015/2016. I do hope ther eis a clause to get Darlow early though if Krul is injured. Just to avoid the Elliot situ.

Oh come on, man - it's a brilliant move from us, to be fair. Football is becoming business-related, Ashley was arguably just ahead of that curve. FFP is kind of draft one, but look at what is happening - all of the transfers are done in more sensible ways. Lukaku was £28m, one of the biggest of the Summer, but they made that on Fellaini last year and loaned their way to 6th. Chelsea, City are selling players to recoup money now, their bottomless investment has come to an end. We're making our move now.

I don't know what romance you expect in 2014 from football, but if all this stuff means that your children and grandchildren have a top flight Newcastle United to support, then how can we complain? Should we follow Pompey, Wolves, Coventry?! This Summer has been exceptional for the Toon, we have been the best transfer operator thus far now we've done a £5m deal to replace Krul/Willo next season. The only negative is that we could do with a defender, but maybe Satka is a Phil Jones or Rio Ferdinand and can step in? At least we've got optimism for the season ahead.

I'd say it's more likely to replace Krul / Colo next season. I think his legs will have gone even more and Willo will be our 1st choice. To be honest I think Willo already is our first choice CB, or at least would be for me - scary as that sounds!

I'll agree he's not likely to walk into a top 7 side. However you have to admit that our defense looks better when Willo is a part of it. Just look at the Malaga & Shalke games, no Willo = 4 conceded, with Willo = 0 conceded. He's not fast but he makes few errors and looks more solid than any other senior CB at the club - including Colo these days (I can't talk to the youngsters as I've not seen enough of them) If we really want to progress, we have to either get 2 new CB's in or get Willo to babysit Good & Streete through a few PL games to get them up to speed so they can possibly fulfill their potential.

Basically, while he may be not be great, I hesitate to criticize too heavily what appears to be, in my opinion, the best CB option we have at present.

I used top 7 as that's where we are aiming to be, not that as an example of where our defense is now. So the sort of quality we should be looking to buy or promote through to the team would be players that could fight for a place in a Spurs or an Everton team.
