Newcastle 5th Top Spender With Over £6M On Agents’ Fees

The Premier League has announced what each of its clubs spent on agents’ fees.



And of course Manchester City spent more than any other Premier League side over the last year with £9.66M going to representative of the players, which is now obviously a lucrative job to be in. How do you apply to be one of these?

Tottenham spent the next highest amount at £7.57M, Liverpool were third on £7.0M, Chelsea were 4th on £6,46M and Newcastle were 5th top spender with £6.38M.

Champions Manchester United spent £4.46M and there was £71.87M in total fees spent between 1st October 2010 and 30th September, and that turns out to be the highest amount since the Premier League first published the figures back in 2008.

It is a rise of £4.73m on the £67.14m spent between over the previous 12 months, which is around a 7% increase.

The three lowest spenders included two of the promoted sides in Swansea at £248k and Norwich at £710k, with Wigan 3rd bottom on £659k.

The total spending on agents’ frees has been around £70M, but of course it was highest last year at £71.87M:

2010-11: £71.87M
2009-10: £67.14M
2008-09: £70.69M

We continue to wonder how a club like Manchester City hope to balance their books under the new Financial Fair Play Rules, which will be phased in over the next three or four years, and essentally will insist that the clubs balance their books.

Only the amount brought in over the financial year in revenues will be allowed to be spent on players, and of course City lost £197M in their last financial year through June of this year and spent huge amounts in the transfer market over the last three years, and that amount is over £800M.

Over the last two financial years Newcastle reduced their losses from £33.37M to £4.7M and in all likelihood will make a decent profit in this financial year, which will end next June.

Here are the financial for the last three years through last June for Newcastle:

2008-2009 - £37.7M loss
2009 – 2010 - £33.57M loss
2010 – 2011 - £4.7M loss

Newcastle are doing a good job in getting their financials in order, in spite of these daft fees they have to pay out .

Derek LLambias had said that free agents, such as Demba Ba, Sylvain Marveaux and Mehdi Abeid don’t come in for nothing, and usually there are big agents’ fees in those free transfers, as we can see.

But it’s also interesting that one reason Turkish striker Mevlut Erdinc didn’t arrive from PSG in the summer, was that Newcastle were unwilling to pay the exorbitant fee his agent, Pierre Frelot, wanted for the deal.

Hmm not too sure about this being published, now agents will know how much we spend and will want a lot!
