Have the Islanders moved to the Barclays centre now then? I knew it was in the pipeline but didn't realise it was this season.
We got a yellow cab from the rank outside of JFK. It was a set rate of $52, as in set by the city of NY. It's non negotiable. There was 4 of us with loads of cases and we had to wait about 20 minutes. Factor in a decent tip( 15 to 20 dollars) but it takes a good 3/4 to an hour to get from JFK to Manhattan and it's well worth it.
Get the Staten Island ferry (ITS FREE) get meal in Staten Island, 30% cheaper than Manhattan....GREAT CITY....Enjoy... ZABARS on the corner of WEST 90th (I think its 90th and BROADWAY for some NEW YORK brekkie. FLY into Newark...Closest airport to Manhattan FACT ...Take AIR TRAIN to PENN STATION $25 one way per person I'm there in May on way to see the relatives in Niagara.
I just looked that up to see how close it is to our hotel, so may have to give it a try. Also noticed on Maps, appropriately enough, Carmines. It looks ok from the web site and reviews. Has anyone else been there? Whats the best place in New York for Ribs and such like, as jnr eats ribs where ever we go.
Head to the Pier where you can take in the Intrepid museum. Greenwich Village is worth the trip, plenty of bars catering for all sorts of musical tastes. Comedy shows are hit and miss, I've to been to a couple where the American sense of humour just didn't make even crack a smile, however there are comedy clubs out there where you may find comedians from the uk who just rip the piss out of Yanks (the Yanks dont even get it) and that alone is worth the entry fee. Bubba Gump shrimps is good, but you can find cheaper grub elsewhere. Hooters are always worth the visit, peachy arses in orange shorts with great tits, food is ok too. Got to do Empire State and ground zero, first time I went i was lucky enough to go up the twin towers, awesome views and lifts (not elevaters) that go up in 10's. Never watched any sport there, but have seen american football and baseball elsewhere, I have to say how ****e it was (that could be from the lack of understanding of the sport though). Shopping, used to be cheap for electrical stuff, clothes.......take a book while your Mrs shops, or find a bar and wait for her there. Having been numerous times courtesy of the Royal Navy, I wouldn't go back. Too many other places on my 'to visit' list, plus over a period of time I have developed a bit of a disliking to Yanks in general.'Have a nice day' said so falsely, grips my poo. Anyway, first time out there, I'm sure you'll have a great time as I probably did the first time I went. Enjoy it, remember you can always sleep on the return flight so make sure you do all you want in the City that never sleeps. Aye
Travel-wise, even if you aren't going to have active data on your phone when there, I recommend downloading the "City mapper" app (it's free) to your phone or tablet now. It covers many cities in the world and you can assess what the best way is to get from a to b as well as how long it will likely take and how much it will cost.
Not having it. You've let yourself down here. Accepting any price at face value is not how it's done. There are acceptable bohemian acts like ****ting the bath but this is too much.
Take the East River ferry from midtown to Wall Street (about $4). Great views of the bridges and midtown / downtown manhattan from the water. Get off in Brooklyn and explore Greenpoint / Williamsburg. Ride the subway. It's cheap. The 7 train to flushing/corona park or the Q express to Coney Island are interesting routes. Tip 20% on meals (on top of tax). Wether you agree with it or not, it's a ****ty thing to stiff someone on what's essentially their wages. You won't change the system by not tipping, you'll just look like a dick. Tip $1 per drink. Drink enough and you tend to get a buy back. Plan, plan, plan. Decide what you want to do and work out where it is and how you're getting there. It's a great City but it's ****ing hectic.
Look Walt, the taxi driver was about 6'4" and built like a brick ****house. If he hadn't been a cab driver he could easily have been a bad boy Yardy. He also had a massive barny with a traffic cop just as we entered Manhatten over whether he had encroached a box junction or not. To be quite honest I more than happy to pay him whatever he wanted. He was a nice bloke though.
Fair enough. Still, you couldve tried the old "let's call it a gentleman's $50.00" and gauged his reaction.
Yes, this is their first season at the Barclays Center (they use the Americanized spelling, by the way). A good third of the lower bowl features "obstructed view" seats for the hockey configuration. How absurd.
Thanks for all the tips guys. Booked the Radio City Christmas show, top of the rock, Empire state building all online, taking the staten island ferry to see statue of liberty free, helicopter ride booked, Elf the musical on broadway booked, car from newark airport to hotel on 7th avenue, the rest we shall go with the flow.
Tip for when you go up the rock. Stay sober. I was pissed as a newt and I think I may have made a bit of a tit of myself.
I should have guess with the spelling! That's a shame, its a fantastic arena, seems bizarre they didn't plan ahead knowing the Islanders were eventually going to move in there.
