ok, we have 3 players who play a similar game - lallana,lee and now falque (not the same i know) but they like to run with the ball, look for the quick lay offs and cut in from the wings. can all 3 be played at the same time, with say only lambert up front , lee in the hole with the others on the wings, 5 in midfield, do not think NA would start with 3 in defence and just go out and try to win with pure attack( would be cool though against some teams that may park the bus), keep one on the bench as an impact.do we need another striker as all 3 know where the net is

Chill, the poster is asking for comments on what is a genuine football matter. Nice change. The problem is there is only one Rickie Lambert type player and that's Rickie Lambert. Good as he is, he will miss games and we need another player who can link play as well as he does, and is as physically strong in the air as he is. I've been really pleased with the way we've coped without him, but the opposition has been very poor. DC is a class act if he keeps fit. Guly will be his usual languid self - and score goals - but he's never going to boss centre backs the way Rickie does. So yes, we do need another striker IMO. But your key question of whether we can have 3 small quick players darting about the pitch .. it would worry me, but I am sure Nige will have tried out these things in training.
 
Too many lightweight players would not work as far as I am concerned. Small nimble players can add another dimension to a team's style of play but three such players could be overwhelmed by the strength of some teams. Though as we have not yet seen the new boys play it is too early to tell.

I would say it would be fine to play all 3, say as an example playing the 442 with lallana lm, falque rm, lambert ls and Lee rs because of his left foot. One I've always wanted to see us play was 4-3-2-1 especially when we were having 3 mids on the pitch. Lallana as a lf I think would be phenomenal. But now we have players to ensure we don't need to be playing 3 cm's now and defensively we would be worse no doubt due to the lack of the wingers tracking back, the mid 3 would have to track back.
 
Is Lee left footed? Some clips were inverted to get past copyright.

Against Forest we moved the ball around, played mainly on the floor and created space, which is how we want to play with or without Lambert. I suppose it helped that Forest were dreadful.
 
The academy sides at Saints seem to be using a 4-2-3-1 system. This is probably the "Southampton style" Cortese talked of in his statement on the club website in 2010, with the entire club working to the same system from under 8's to the first team eventually.

Adkins has already used this system on a number of occasions since he has been at the club. It would seem to suit players like Falque and Lallana.
 
I can't tell you how happy I am about the fact that we've just signed two left footed players. Absolute miracle! I think the formations and match day squads will largely depend on whose in form, whose available for selection and who is our opposition so to give this question a definitive answer is difficult. It will be interesting to see if we go back to the flat 4-4-2 once Lambert's back and the new additions are settled though.

Are you Catholic Red Stripe? The big question is whether "form" will dictate that Lallana is dropped if he is not playing well ...............

This is what I would do at home. (If falque and lee are as good as I hope.) Lambert has been playing deeper recently anyway. Plus there is a lot of flexibility to change it to 4-4-2 if you need to, or bring on Steeeeeve/guly/DC.

Lee is not small, he's over 6ft and about 11 stone 8 pounds

Hahaha no what I mean is our team - especially in the middle of the park, is quite unbalanced in respect to preferred foot. Our midfield is constructed of Lallana/De Ridder/Morgan/Hammond/Cork/Chaplow/Guly and Ward-Prowse, all right footed players. I just think it'll give us more options having some leftys in there too!
 
Apparently Lee can play either as a central striker or out wide. I would imagine to start with we will stick to the 4-4-2, with Falque wide right cutting in with his left foot, with Lee playing 2nd striker to Lambert.

If we revert to a 4-2-3-1 formation, I would imagine Lee would go wide left and Falque would play the number '10' role in the hole behind Lambert.

Adkins has been talking a lot recently about flexibility and fluidity so you may get a combination of both formations with Lee, Lallana and Falque interchanging positions.

Lee is no stranger to this as his former club Hiroshima were known for playing with a Total football style so I have read.
 
i'm not sure Lee is the same kind of player as Falque and Lallana. But i think Guly is similar so could have Lallana, Guly and Falque interchanging behind Lee or Lambert. I think it does take the pressure of Lallana as if he is having a bad day then Falque can come on and do similar job.

licking my lips at the thought of spider playing through balls to these guys. this is my fav formation
