So how will you now tell us that Barnes selection is justified?

I wont, but if it's down to how much he won(as you mentioned)hes not the most decorated midfield player that ever wore the England shirt, i think Scholes is?, and it wouldn't be just barnes that's out of place in the chosen few based on medals won for their respective nations would it Spurf?

I think it's justified. Barnes did a huge amount for black football in this country, his legacy is arguably greater than many of the others on the list. Footballing greatness shouldn't be based purely on individual success or ability, but what the contribution is for future generations to enjoy.

Got to agree with you WY, but Viv Anderson was a good shout too and so would Clyde Best have been given that he was one of but not the first black player in the top English division.

The whole selection is far too 60s centric in my opinion, very boring. I find it quite sad that footballing culture in this country is still so heavily geared towards '66 and all that.

I didn't actually say that it should be based on medals won. I was just supporting PNP's comment that Viv Anderson had a greater shout based on contribution. I think they have gone for retired footballers to avoid any unforseen events spoiling their image. My case is based more on football ability. Moore, Best, Charlton, and so on I just don't think Barnes is in that bracket on ability, do you?

I wasn't saying that Viv Anderson should've been chosen ahead of Barnes because of his medal count, I just can't see how Barnes' selection is justified.
An all white line-up would've been a mistake and it's good that at least one non-white player was selected, I just don't think that it should've been him.
Anderson was the first black player to represent England in a full international and he won the title and two European Cups with Forest, plus various trophies with Arsenal, Utd and Sheffield Wednesday.
The trophy mention is just to show that he wouldn't be getting picked from one achievement and he'd have been a better choice, in my opinion.
