that’s undeniably and as you demonstrate scientifically true. There are plenty of us who have what could be described as “healthier” addictions.

from fitness, to obsessing over innocent hobbies, to even work.

Has no cigarette advertising stopped people smoking? Every day I see people smoking in the porch outside of their houses, what is that all about? I have never smoked in my life, except passively, I made a New Years Resolution every year, to give up passive smoking, never could keep a resolution.

I would say that either that has, or better education on the perils of it, because there are certainly less smoking than before.

Maybe not stopped but the amount has gone down dramatically in the past couple of decades, though no idea if that has anything to do with it or not. It's surely a good thing to not encourage it though?

Plus, everyone knows smoking is cool as ****, especially when you're coughing and spluttering everywhere...

It's a good point. Very little evidence that the advertising ban has had a major effect on people giving up smoking other than amongst young people where it seems less socially acceptable than when I was young. Overall smoking has dropped about 5% since the advertising ban. Still accounts for £30m cost on the NHS!

But getting back to the point on betting, and my reason for arguing in favour of an advertising ban - gambling addiction affects families not just the individuals. 3.5million are thought to be at serious risk of overcommitting. It's a hidden addiction that only comes to light too late to save the home, the job, the family and - in over 600 cases each year - a life.

One thing the club may have overlooked is that Sportsbet .io are a relatively unknown betting company and now they’re propelled into a lot of people’s minds (good for the sponsor I guess).

When I first started betting there weren’t that many to choose from, but I’ll always remember one weekend where I signed up to about six different companies for their new customer deals, and ended up losing about £70 (nothing really but was loads to me at the time).

Who’s to say how many saints fans are now thinking ‘they’re new, I’ll go and have a look at them.’ I would have when I first started betting and you never know if it will be the first seeds of a life changing addiction.

For me the thought of losing now overrides the potential winnings but that won’t be the case for a lot of fans and, while I understand the move for this season, I think we should have chosen better.

If anyone is stupid enough to gamble, It's there fault., And not that of the club or the betting company. You may not agree with this, and have different opinions. But anyone can choose not to gamble..., More fool them.

5%? Can I ask where you got that from? I thought the ban was 40 odd years ago and would be astounded if the amount of smokers hadn't dropped by considerably more than that in that time.

Though as I said earlier I've no idea how much the ban itself would have contributed to that.

No one is saying it’s the club’s fault when people gamble, just that it shouldn’t be actively promoted on our shirts, website, social media etc.

And if you want to call people stupid/fools, a quick spell-check might be worthwhile.

Well you know what they say about statistics....!

You're right to the extent that in the 70's 50% of the population smoked whereas now it's around 17% (Cancer Research UK site). But the trickle of advertising bans ran through to 2011/12 and the 5% reflects the drop since then (Office of National Statistics). Really hard to evidence any change back to advertising -v- social change.

Ah fair enough, I must be thinking of tv & radio ban then presumably. As fats and yourself alluded to though, it's probably more down to better education and social habits more than anything.

I find it weird to think that people used to smoke in the workplace and pubs.

I remember working behind the bar as a non smoker and coming home stinking of smoke. Only 13 years since it was banned but seems alien now.

Where did you get the 5% figure from and when was the ban introduced?

Edit: ignore - you’ve answered Libby, who is younger than me and stays up later

I’ll respond the same to you... this is such an unsympathetic statement and shows little or no understanding of the complexity of human beings.

I find it a little demoralising when I read views like this and another chip away at my faith in human kindness
