Can I try to lift the 'apparent' disappointment regarding Akinfenwa.... who wouldn't have been my first choice etc - I wouldn't say that he couldn't be useful ( although we already have similar players in Kedwell & Burton ) but he was released by Northampton - so won't have cost any fee. This means that we still have a lot of unused money from last season and now Payne's transfer fee to play with. I wouldn't say that any deal with McDonald is dead - but may be taking a little longer to materialise ( I hope .) What Scally needs to understand is that, as clever as it might be to look for bargains - sometimes you have to speculate to accumulate - as we did with Bob Taylor & Carl Asaba............ you usually get what you pay for..... pay peanuts - expect monkeys.
Hang on, wasn't this the same Bayo that everybody wanted to sign last season?? Some fans have very short memories
I never wanted Bayo back. With bayo at the club you get drawn into longball football and you need a quick striker to play off him. We don't have Cody and Birchall is being let go. Kedwell offerd far more than just strength. He told the guys he had photos with that he is "just training with them right now" make of that what you will. I don't want him back though, sorry Bayo.
I didn't even want him first time around. With Bayo and Cody in prime form we could only finish outside the play-off places in league two.
And that's all their fault that we had a defence which leaked goals at important stages and had a lack lustre group of guys around them? In a team whose fitness was abysmal. They had a 36 goal partnership...that's prett damn good. It's a low risk move to bring him in and it's a stroke of genius if they reunite him with Cody and they can continue where they left off. The guy will barely cost a thing. Is preseason. I have no issue with this move. I love the guy. You all love Kedwell fr his work ethic and bum him...you'll be all over akinfenwa. Guy rarely stops motoring. We got drawn into long ball football with Kedwell in the squad too. I actually rate Bayo as a better footballer....much better touch and vision.
Hoadie your comments infuriate me most of the time, I really don't think you have watched hardly any of our games. You say kedwell is 10 times better than Bayo, well your confused on that for a start. If we go on goals coring alone, which isn't Bayo's best attribute, he scored twice as many as Kedwell last year. Then take into account his impact when Cody was here, if you watched the games that season then you would have clearly seen that without Bayo, Cody would have had a fraction of the goals he ended up with. It looks to me like Allen is thinking of getting the partnership back, if we had a sensible defence that season we would have gone up, I'm sure most would agree, and that's even taking into account our awful start that year. Every other comment is by you Hoadie and its practically all irrelevant, most of the time just repeating what the previous poster has stated. Give other people a chance to comment! And seriously if you are as good a mates with Kedwell as you suggest, than you would have known about Bayo training before anyone else!
I'm going to be really really urined off if we don't sign Cody. I don't mind having Bayo ,but when MA said that the fans would love who we are signing 99.9% of us thought he meant Cody. The club and the manager have had all the week end and today to deny that we are signing Cody, but they have not done so. They would probably say that they don't need to comment on rumours on message boards etc, and normally they are right. But this time they are wrong. We know they read message boards (Scally has appeared on them from time to time) and they surely know that fans are excited about getting Cody back, but if we don't sign him ,it is a let down of enormous disappointment of which MA's credibility may never recover. The chairman of Peterborough regularly goes onto Twitter to communicate with fans, and Monty the dog used to last season but doesn't now, so communication with fans ,I feel this way is paramount. At the end of the day, this excitement was not generated by message boards, but by MA himself, and in my opinion he needs to explain his failure to stem this rumour about Cody very quickly, because it was HIM who started it all in the first place. He should just have kept his trap shut instead of bragging to the media he was going to sign someone the fans would love.
Excellent comments. It seems that fans are divided about the return of Bayo anyway and the disappointment of not seeing a "marquee" signing only turns some fans off the Bayo signing even more.
Am I the only one wondering: 1) if Bayo is training with us (which he appears to have been) 2) and seeing that he is a free agent (which he is) 3) and that the negotiations have been going on for a while (as on Saturday MA seemed sure it was all but done and would be announced today) 4) and (judging By the video brb posted) we want him and he wants to come to us If you add all the above together then why the delay???? Why no comment from the club????
Hang on, did the FA implement a new rule saying that clubs can only sign one forward per season? Just because we may sign Bayo doesn't mean we can't also sign Cody and just because we haven't had any news today doesn't mean that we won't sign Cody. Lets look at some points, Cody has only just been let go by Coventry and he may still be in discussions with them regarding compensation, or the club maybe restricted from making the announcement until a set date, as he is still technically a Coventry player. MA has not failed to deliver as of yet and to start doubting his credibility for the sake of a few days is stupid. And lets not forget that Gillingham football club is bigger than any single player and the Cody "fanboys" should not be allowed to undo all the good work Allen has achieved
Absolutely BSG, if Burton and Birchall go, we need at least 2 replacements. German is in, but he can also play wing and I still have a suspicion that Kedwell could go back to AFC at some point. One thing I want to clarify though, has Cody actually been released because to my knowledge they only said he can leave, exactly the same wording as we used with Lee and Birchall, so I'm thinking some sort of fee may still be required. I mean why would they pay Cody off for him to join a rival club for free? Makes no sense to me, I think we will have to pay something which causes a delay. I'm hopeful on both Bayo and Cody joining us though, but I think,Cody may take a while.
Well, I go away for a few days fishing and things are going crazy, "The one good German" signs, Cody, Bayo or both are on the verge of signing (who for hasn't been established) Hoadie is still getting in trouble for posting rubbish (hate and love are so close) Just as an aside, players moving on a free are rarely if ever "free", signing on fee's can be as big as a transfer fee.
I really hope those who think Cody will still sign are right. But you've got to admit the stories coming out of Shrewsbury are worrying
Looks like an Akinfenwa / German striker partnership this year then. I think we will smash league one with that.
Dear oh dear. Im pretty certain from some of the tweets and comments on the forums that there are one or two gillingham supporters who could win the lottery and then moan that they had to drive to the office to collect it Last season we all moaned. The manager was too late. The signings were too late. We got the wrong manager, signed the wrong players. And then we won the league. What do people want? Messi? If Cody doesn't want to come it's not the chairmans fault. He spends when he can and when he needs to. We have no debt, no loans hanging over us and people seem to think scally should break the bank on ONE untested at league one player. Frankly some of you are being ridiculous. We have signed - Linganzi - a man who embarrassed our (champion) midfield German - a man who MA admits is a bit of a punt but has something about him Oh and Adebayo Akinfenwa, a player who scored plenty for us, outscored every single one of our strikers last season and who is almost a lower league beckham in that he is a brand, a brand we can take advantage of. If Allen has decided big lumps and route one is the way out of league one then I will follow him and our team proudly.
I have taken a happy pill. Wake me up when it's sorted. No use venting flames at unknown maybees. Can't wait till August....
Don't you just love the holier than thou supporter. I really don't enjoy the style of football that Akinfenwa's presence leads to so I would rather not see him return. If anyone believes it will not be route one they are deluded. Obviously not all his fault but the type of football a team can play with him in the side is extremely limited .
Holier than thou? Jog on mate. I'm not even going to get into flame war with you. Go back 12 months. Same moans. Same gripes. And we won the league.
