“They” as in the Rovers mgmt team. I think there’s going to be restrictions on development options, it has to be mixed use, not just residential
Why move Hull Fair!?!? Its been on Walton Street since 1888 that almost as long as some posters on here have been going for!
How much does the fair bring to the city in terms of monetary gain? Is it actually worth the disruption it causes to the football? I can't say I've ever enjoyed it, but I wouldn't want to get rid of it for those that do, just don't put it near my football ground. East Park or something?
Before that it was elsewhere for well over 600 years. Moving it could see the present eyesore site redeveloped.
I'd say it takes way more money out the city then it brings in. It's a piss poor reason to have that bit of land kept the way it is and just yet more proof that HCC seem intent on keeping the city behind most others in the country.
I just can't imagine the funds from the fair go towards the city, I imagine most of it goes to the people that run it. I guess they pay a week's rent for the land, but if it's making us more than it costs in clean up, policing, health and safety and leccy I'd be very surprised. I get it, it's iconic to the locals, but it's also a ****ing nightmare and I think it could easily be held somewhere else where it wouldn't be such a disruption.
I think it does make money for the council. Can’t remember where I read it but pretty sure it did. I like the fair I must say, but the problem financially isn’t that the council doesn’t make money from stall rents etc, it’s that the money spent behind the tills mostly goes out of the city. I know this won’t happen by the way, but if all stall holders were from the city then the council would make the same money but also the stall holders would be more likely to spend the money they’d made in the city with other local shops etc
Think this would be great, but what about that protected species? Think I had mentioned a few months ago I was keen to see development and someone said there was a rare species that prevented anything being done?
Wasn't what? The discussion is around developing 'the MKM and surrounding area' isn't it? That's the area I was referring to.
The railway triangle has the newts not the fair ground on Walton Street both are near the ground but are not the same place. You could develop Walton Street and not disturb the newts.
It was just an excuse to make a **** joke about posters ages TBH. I haven't been to fair for the best part of 30 years so where it is or isn't is not something I should really comment on I do have sepia tinted fond memories of going as a kid though.
Those two plots are on opposite sides you could and probably would do one without the other. Any development would be unlikely to be a 360 job all around.
Ok fair enough, thought the intent was to redevelop the entire area. It feels like a lot of wasted ground.
I believe the fair is a big money spinner for the Council, though they refuse to say how much. The HDM made a Freedom of Information request a few years ago and this was the response: “It is considered that disclosure of this detailed information, in relation to the cost/profit of Hull Fair, could prejudice the commercial interests of the council.” “We have considered the public interest in regard to the release of this information and in so doing have weighed the benefits that disclosure would provide in respect of openness and accountability against the harm and prejudice which could be caused to the council in release of this detailed information.”
Almost sounds like they were saying that if it was known how much (read: little) the Fair makes, the Allams would have been able to try to force their hand on development plans. Or am I reading that wrong?
