Labour have put through a parliamentary motion to have a specific national anthem for England at sporting events. Currently Wales and Scotland have their own, but we are lumbered with the union's trudge fest 'God save the Queen'.

Suggestions for a new anthem are The adaptation of Blake's poem 'Jerusalem'. Elgar's 'Land of hope and Glory' or possibly something altogether different.

Personally I'd go with 'Jerusalem' as it evokes the spirt of Albion and the 'Green and pleasant land' that William Blake likened to the new Jerusalem. It is far more evocative of our country than some poxy worship to a German aristocratic family who only happened on monarchy by accident of birth.

Any other suggestions ?

Love 'Heroes' ... but not a national anthem for me ... the Scottish, Irish and Welsh anthems need to be matched for passion and intent and, as such, only one 'tune' does that for me:

I will not cease from mental fight,
Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand,
Till we have built Jerusalem
In England's green and pleasant land.

Land Of Hope & Glory would be my second choice ...

Third was close ...but I'd go for 'The Wheels On The Bus' ... on the basis that even the thick bling obsessed ******* that pull on an England football shirt may have mastered the lyrics sufficiently during their limited time spent in the country's education system :emoticon-0136-giggl

When the Aussies were dominating the Ashes, the England opening batsman once walked out to a chorus of "Send In The Clowns" being played over the tannoys.

Personally I think the national anthem should be Tubthumping by Chumbawamba. Is there a more appropriate lyric to describe English sportsmen than "pissing the night away"?

Ace of Spades, to be replaced by Bomber when playing Germany.
That or Fear of the Dark by Iron Maiden for the live woah-oah bits.

I'm all for an English anthem even if it's so that Sun reading idiots and visiting Merkins may finally learn that England is not the same as the United Kingdom.

And did those feet in ancient time
Walk upon England's mountains green?
And was the holy Lamb of God
On England's pleasant pastures seen?

And did the Countenance Divine
Shine forth upon our clouded hills?
And was Jerusalem builded here
Among these dark Satanic mills?

Bring me my bow of burning gold:
Bring me my arrows of desire:
Bring me my spear: O clouds unfold!
Bring me my chariot of fire.

I will not cease from mental fight,
Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand
Till we have built Jerusalem
In England's green and pleasant land.

this bit when we play the Scotch

Lord, grant that Marshal Wade
May by thy mighty aid
Victory bring.
May he sedition hush and like a torrent rush,
Rebellious Scots to crush.
God save the King.
