The promoted team and management of 2008 had a thread of people who cared about the club. We really have turned into Watford mark 2, with a load of journeymen throughout the club
You're correct, it was a team from top to bottom, alas it fragmented as time went on, and the lure of the media began to court Brownie, it became more about him then the team he'd successfully moulded
Apart from knowing his onions and being a very humble pro,Steve Bruce was second to none in terms of having a huge network of contacts. That brought us huge success.
As you were one of the few on here that backed the decision to get rid, do you think we'd be able to attract anyone that the fans will think is an improvement on Selles?
I don't think that's true. All the fans want to see is progress and building to something... And even without that, a manager setting a team up to have a good and go out with some fight. I can live with that.
I had the same thought the other day. Say we cant attract the type of manager the majority of fans would be happy with, the Gary O'Neil's, Steve Cooper etc.. After that there's such mixed fan reaction towards different names that makes it impossible to please everyone. But do we just want Acun to hire someone who appeases the fans? Not for me.. I want the owner and his team to work in the background and find someone who is right for the job. Has he done well at previous clubs? Does he play an attractive brand of football? Can he get the best out of players? There's plenty out there who we could hopefully attract, and it doesnt always have to be the same 3 or 4 names that gets mentioned every time we sack a manager. Hopefully this is what they're doing this time, actually picking someone based on merit and not simply being sold on 1 interview.
Baz keeps using this line when referring to the managerial situation: "which it's [the appointment] hoped will be sooner rather than later". Well, ****ing obviously. What worries me is that he has to keep being vague and can't say "manager will be appointed by the weekend" or "will be confirmed next week" because the club haven't even decided on who it will be yet, which means there won't have been talks about backroom staff, potential targets, contract clauses etc, so even if they've done all the interviews, they still need to negotiate the contract and have the bloke sign it. Tim Walter was appointed on May 31st, but was in talks from about May 15th onward so the process had gone on longer by this time last year. We'll be lucky if we've got somebody in place by June.
Just in case we didn't already know, Baz has listed the Brain Team. Behind the scenes as Hull City quartet look to ramp up manager search - Hull Live
Be interesting to see how their Summer pans out, apparently they face a points deduction for FFP breaches and were hoping they wouldn't come down this season. A few of the Leicester fans I know aren't happy with Martin and are worried about how this season will go. I'd have though the parachute money would help, as would selling their star players like El Khannouss and Oliver Skipp. Apparently that will only "scratch the surface". Oh dear.
It doesn’t help when Acun sacks managers doing relatively well. People will then always ask the question are they any better than… With Walter and Arveladze, I think most fans would have united in agreement that any decent new manager would be well received, as Selles was.
Me too, and likability is much underrated. I would only employ or promote people who I could work with, and obviously write off any Blades or Leeds fans
Will Still looking increasingly likely at Southampton. Just listened to TS European correspondent and his body of work in France is outstanding..
i think thats fair enough , ive never interviewed anybody but been asked for opinions by people who are , and they have to fit in , nobody wants to be stuck with somebody for 8 hours a day who doesn't follow football , what else is there to talk about?
