Apple has built its success on hype. By spending an absolute fortune on marketing, products are labelled as a must have item. It is pretty amazing how they have developed this image, particularly when their products aren't especially the best or most advanced.

Everyone without an iPhone is considered less worthy. All competitors are considered copies. The iPhone is considered THE mobile phone.

This is the exact reason why I don't have, and never will have an iPhone.

I do like the fact there is just the Apple iPhone. There is no selection of Apple mobile phones to choose from. Just the iPhone. I do also like the way apps are screened before being published.

But it is Android for me, particularly HTC. Whilst friends struggle with breaking iPhones, my Desire HD has been plodding along, without the added "functionality" of FaceTime.

Since your current laptop is getting a bit old, you'll probably want to buy a new one. An upgrade is always better than a simple repair.

You should be able to get a decent laptop for £250-£300. It certainly won't be world beating but it'll do the job and as long as you have a good enough CPU, Hard Drive and Memory you'll be sorted :)

I had a £300 Toshiba laptop and it was fine for 3 years until I upgraded to a high-end desktop PC.

Have a look on (good) online sites. 2GB of RAM should be fine if you're only doing simple Office and Internet tasks and a dedicated graphics card isn't essential unless you plan on playing games or doing video editing.

BHD I assume you have done all of the defragmentation and other maintainence functions. Have you looked in the task manager to see what is running as well, I have had to remove Apple Mobile programs from my laptop and pc as they eat all of the CPU and are a secret download when you update itunes. Mozilla Firefox can get itself twisted sometimes and eat CPU space.

If your blue screen is a new thing you could go back to a restore point from a few days before the blue screen started. If you run Windows that system organises its own so you could be lucky there.
I have attempted to do everything i know of, but the laptop dies before i can complete them. I have run 2 different Anti-virus, both were recommended by 'experts' but neither find anything or run in normal mode. I will check the programs again but i deleted a load of ones i did not need before. I cant run System restore as it says there are no restore points to choose from.

BHD, save your cash and just buy a new hard drive for the laptop, all you need to do then is "purchase" the OS and office suite, you can drag your data from the old drive via a USB caddie (under twenty quid at Maplins), there are many free anti virus options on the interweb, you could even upgrade the memory and do it for less than the repair quote.
I could do that, but i would then have to get hold of someone to fit it and fix it anyway, so its a little pointless. If i knew how to put it together i would do it.We have an Office disk which we can use to install it again if need be, i would just need anti-virus. But im sure i can get that cheaply.

BHD, have a look at this... http://www.priceminister.co.uk/offer/buy/80630350/lenovo-ideapad-s10-3-netbook-intel-atom-n455-1gb-ram-250gb-hdd-win7-starter.html

If you look down the page, there is a code to bring the laptop down to £139.99, which is a very decent price.
I am liking that. Thats a great price. I have a netbook which i got from uni, but i broke that when i dropped it. So the motherboard cracked. The question i have about this is will it cope with me running microsoft word and 3 internet tabs? If so i will definitely have a closer look. Thanks for that.

Yes thank you to everyone who has posted. I will look into everything suggested and will see what the guys on the PChelp forum to see if i can get free help and clear it myself. If not i will definitely look at Bucks' idea in more detail.

I won't lie to you, it's not going to set your world on fire. Don't expect it to be great at running system hungry multimedia apps and games. BUT, if what you are after (and it sounds to me like it is) is something to run office apps on and browse a few pages on the internet, then this will do a fine job. <ok>

Yeah i dont play games. I just use Tv catch up sites, Facebook and Not606 on the internet and often have 2/3 open at once. My current netbook did no let me do this. Other than that i use office for uni, but thats it.

I would be lost if i did not have my ipod!! I have the codes to get on the internet at most of my friends. All i need now is internet at The Vic and my Dad's.

lol, i would use that. But it would cost me a fortune as my plan does not include internet lol. Just texts and calls.

hmm. It is a shame because i think they used to have a Wi-fi. You would get the code from the food counters and it would be good quality and signal too.

I love it too. i just wish it would work first time lol. The PC guy knows our number off by heart and we are on 1st name terms. Not a great claim really, is it. :p

Oh we are, and the Doctors at the local surgery. After my grandma living with us when she had her brain tumour for a year and 14 days we know them and they know us. It has its perks though.
