Our home kit reminds me of Liverpool, going to take a while to get used to. However, really like the away kit, think its very nice. We going to get a third kit, or keep the Brazil kit from last year?
The first occurence of an event does not necessarily establish the tradition. Rather it is the continued occurence of a certain event over a period of time, regardless of what came first. Ie; Santa Claus was originally green. However, this later changed to red, and continued for such a long period that it became the traditional colour for him. So the sash is not tradition, the stripes are. That being said, Saints do also have another tradition; that of experimenting from time to time. I like that we do so. Unfortunately this risks upsetting a few people from time to time, but at least it is not boring. As has been said before, if we win games, the kit will become irrelevant.
Oh more than a few. Firstly from the folk who genuinely don't like the kit. Then from the folk who genuinely like it. Then the folks who enjoy poking a stick at the shirt-phobics righteous indignation. Followed by those who don't really care either way about the shirt and wonder why we don't simply all cut and paste our comments from the last thread. Well, I think that is everybody. Have I missed anyone?
Me. A person who liked the kit, but spotted that this was a trap thread so avoided joining in because I am too superior....
I will tolerate the new kit and live with it for a year although I would 't buy a shirt. Cortese knows it has been a big mistake and we will not have to put up with it next year. Nicola does not get everything right.
Exactly, this strip will be around for 2 years tops, before we see a return to stripes. We haven't always had stripes - the majority of the 80's (one of our most successful periods) we played in shirts which weren't striped.
Wigan match will give us an idea as well. And anybody who is complaining about the shirt is now never allowed to sing 'COME ON YOU REDS' again.
Seeing as Saints have a history in kit designs which include sashes - left and right, halves, squares, stripes - from same thickness to unequal thicknesses, very broad to tiny stripes, etc... and some others I probably couldn't think of, I don't know why people get so bloody petulant about the kit. They are representing Southampton FC. Surely, as long as they vaguely play in red & white, while at St Marys, that's all there is to it..? And btw, the new kit still is stripes. Just pin stripes. The Away kit is just the opposite colour arrangement.
cortese needs to **** off out of southampton, who does he think he is changing the kit? the italian ****, i'll kill him!
Check out this site, all our kits since our founding: http://www.historicalkits.co.uk/Southampton/Southampton.htm
So, out of our entire history we've had striped shirts for over a hundred years. And stripes for the twenty years before the 2010/11 sash. That sounds like a strong tradition to me. Can't wait to see what next season's shirt looks like, I'm already tired of this one.
