I listen to the Today programme every morning. It saves me the bother of reading the Daily Mail and Daily Express to source half baked right wing views delivered by cretinous media types. The standard of reporting is often poor. Perhaps this is another example. A Premier League without the jeopardy of relegation would lose at least 50% of its interest, and the TV money generated with the spectacle would soon fade away. It's a crazy idea that I don't believe will ever happen.
The obvious question therefore is, why do you listen? And there's no way in a million years you could ever call it right wing. Indeed, is this the first time in history that the Beeb has been called right wing? Its perennially referred to as left wing as an insult.
Is that aimed at me? My point was, why do you want to 'source half baked right wing views delivered by cretinous media types'?
I've just listened to it and it doesn't say there was ever a vote on relegation from the Premier League.
Because I'm interested in them, just like I'm interested in all kinds of views. I'm leaving it there, or this thread will get locked.
I cant relisten as I'm at work. What did it say about the relegation issue being discussed by foreign premier league owners 4 years ago? Because from memory, while I was driving, the interviewee said the foreign owners at the time were defeated then but now it could be different as two thirds of the clubs are under foreign rule.
It just refers to the issue being raised four years ago, they're obviously referring to the LMA chief's comments that I mentioned, as this was the only time the issue has been raised previously. All he said was that some American and Asian owners would like to see relegation scrapped, he didn't detail how many, or who they were, he just said it could potentially be an issue in the future. He was wrong though, as even if two-thirds of the Premier League chairman did vote for it, it would still have to be approved by the FA, who have a veto and would definitely reject it. It's simply not going to happen.
Did he not say the foreign owners were defeated last time? Cos my memory says he did. I will have to listen again cos his comments seemed a lot more clear in my memory than your claim of a sketchy wave of the arm in the air that it might be an issue but, you know - we're just filling time on the most listened to morning news programme in the UK. And who was the interviewee? I didnt get his name and position.
I believe the Bolton chairman expressed the opinion that not having relegation would be a good idea. You can see why he would hve wanted that. It was quickly dismissed. When the PL was formed there were moves by the big 5 (who were different then to who are considered the big 5 now) who wanted some what were considered lesser clubs demoting and bigger clubs taking their place.
