Netting around Pitches

The FA says clubs may have to put netting around pitches to stop things being thrown at players.
I think that is rediculous, a knee jerk reaction to an incident, and a knee jerk reaction is just what you'd expect from some of the walking dead at the FA.
It would pen in the fans in just the same way as the fences did at Hillsborough. The fact that it may not be rigid or solid won't mean much as anyone who has every been caught up in a net will tell you. And how high would it have to be to ensure no an could throw someting however high up the stand he was?

In reality, the nets would not surround the whole pitch, just those areas where players are most at risk, i.e. around goals or corners or in front of known fervent sections of fans where trouble may be expected.

I'm sorry guys but in this day and age violence of that type is unacceptable and if it continues clubs run the risk of insurance claims and ground closures.

If the idiots can't be eliminated (not as many as there were accepted) then they have to be controlled until they behave or are banned.

That in itself is a problem. This has reared it's ugly head after the Manchester derby and it happened near the half way line! So who can determine where the risk comes from? If they put a net up at the "rowdy" parts of the ground, some prat in a non fenced area may to take advantage, so that bit is surrounded and on it goes until the whole ground is surrounded.

Indeed it would be a bad thing to do as we had all hoped those days were long gone but I am not convinced netting at just certain parts of the ground is THE answer. It may be a short term solution to reduce or even considerably the risk but it certainly will not stop it outright. Only a change of the fans mind can wipe it out and I think we can safely say that will never happen, more's the pity.

I remember the cage that ran from canton station to the ground in the late 70s. Not a pleasant site. We're well past that, but still with the odd blip.

On a positive note, I hear that for the Posh game, the family stand is extended to the away fans so they will be sitting together.

I think they've done that before with the Canton for matches where the away side support is minimal. Wonder if it will be a new low for away support on saturday?

Agreed ITIWRAN. Imagine the backlash if the Etihad was closed for 2 or 3 games - not that the loss of income would bother the owners. You would have to hope that the sensible fans would do their utmost to prevent idiots from taking such action again.

That apart I don't see much in the way of other constructive comments on here. It is a problem which thankfully (so far) we don't see at CCS (other than when those stupid clappers were thrown away at the Reading play off game) but it is obviously evident elsewhere and needs to be tackled before it gets out of hand.

oh come on for god sake why not sanitize the whole fking crowd in straight jackets whilst sucking pc juice through a straw.................u may get the odd looney tune running on but not a any scale where we need fencing in again for fk sake.

I think it's a terrible idea, the majority, say 99.75% of supporters have to suffer because some complete d!cks can't control themselves.

Make the punishments harsher and stop the morons chucking stuff at the players.

Self policing is the best way forward - if a moron sitting near to me started hurling missiles on to the pitch/started monkey chanting etc. I'd have no hesitation in discreetly pointing him/her out to the stewards - the club/authorities could then take appropriate action depending on the severity....can I also point out I'm not normally a snitch its' just I don't want a minority of idiots ruining the game that I love.

Spot on Whiffle, I really do not understand how this type of activity still goes on! Although I do suspect some self policing is in place.
Also, one of those arrested at the Man U game was that clown who ran onto the pitch during the Sheff v Leeds game! How come he isn't banned from all grounds? Hopefully he will get banged up this time.
