People focus far too much on money these days to judge quality. Look at the actual player movement.

    OUT

Carroll - Good striker but tried to hold the club to ransom, his sale has greatly strengthened our financial position.

Nolan - Has been a good servant to the club but after Carroll left, his lack of overall contribution started to show. We got our money back for him.

Campbell - Released. He was on a reported £30kpw which for a 4th/5th choice centre back was too much. Top class in his day but about time to hang up his boots.

Kuqi - Fantastic character and was signed as temporary cover for injuries, he was never 'Carroll's replacement' but fair play, he gave his all for us. Carlisle are apparantly after him.

Youth - Nine youth players failed to make the step up for this season. Tozer to Northampton, McLaughlin to York, Leadbitter to Torquay and best of look to the other six lads currently looking for a club. <ok>

    IN

Marveux - A vital part of the Rennes team, he has attracted the attention of top clubs and would have moved to the premier league sooner had his manager not been so keen to keep him for the duration of his contract, knocking back a £3m bid from West Ham. He had injury problems last season but that did not put off Newcastle and Liverpool from trying to get his services. A left winger who can cover other positions, at very least a good sub for free.

Ba - With a scoring record exceeding 1 in 3 in the challenging Bundesliga, he secured a move to a struggling West Ham and instantly impressed, scoring 7 goals in 12 games. A relegation release clause in his contract allowed him to move for free and he successfully passed a medical at Newcastle. *

Cabaye - A French international who is being seen as a direct replacement for Nolan. He's a goalscoring midfielder who (unlike Nolan **) also contributes assists and was star performer in Lille's double-winning season. A weaker league yes but he will be sorely missed by the club and should he adapt to the English game, will be a vital player in our squad.

Abeid - A young midfeilder who moves straight into the Reserves, involved in the French youth setup and rated by our scouts as 'one to watch'. Cost nothing from relegated Lens.

Ignore the figures on their heads and just consider the quality of the players. Without spending money we have improved the squad and are sitting on sufficient funds to replace Carroll, with two months to pick our man. We don't HAVE to spend all the money if we can find a way to improve frugally. Any leftover can be used to service the club's debt with, shock horror, is actually a POSITIVE!
