Sadly I find myself agreeing with just about everything you have written. A prime example is Christian Benteke right now. He joined Villa from Genk for a 'ucrative package' not knowing anything about their history or standing in British football, nor even what city in the UK they were from. After one 'successful' season he has put in a transfer request despite 3 years of his contract still to run - why? because Spurs are the next step on his gravy train - but worry not he will soon shaft them too if a 'bigger' opportunity arises - typifies everything I detest in modern footballers, despite his obvious talent.
Well it's a tough one really. Surely everybody everywhere wants to get to the top of their profession? Us normal folk have 40 odd years to do that. Footballers get around 10...

True to an extent but then it comes down to greed - Wayne Rooney for instance earns over £11 million in wages a year at the moment - that ignores the fact that he probably brings in at least (if not more than) half that again from 'commercial interests' and 'endorsements' never mind win / goal / title bonuses whilst playing etc - he can potentially earn more in one season playing football than an average UK wage earner can do during those 40 years that you mention - and he probably has a good 5-8 years left in his career? Not aimimg this at Rooney in particular, but he's a prime example - many of these 'top earning' footballers seem to be more motivated by (jealous of) what others are getting paid rather than the playing side - van Persie reportedly being paid more than Rooney so wayne puts in a transfer request to leave the most successful club side in the Prem (ever) to move to Chesea or Arsenal who will pay him as much if not more than (or equal to) what van Persie is getting... Now if he moves abroad because he wants another 'challenge' for equal or less money then he might get some respect from me ... but I suspect that, if he moves, it will be to Chelski for the 'respect' they pile on him in the form of pound notes...
