How fitting that the moon is at 'half mast' tonight

RIP Neil

Thanks for inspiring a generation and more....

Significant part of mankinds greatest achievement, RIP

I guess when people say remember when we lost at home to Wigan, they will say oh yes that was the day Neil Armstrong died, and Hampshire won the T20. Anyway god rest his soul. RIP

I don't have many heroes, but I grew up in the Space Age, and Neil Armstrong easily topped the list. For me, landing on the Moon was the greatest technical achievement by mankind, so far, and I've long known that when it came to choosing a mission commander, NASA didn't hesitate for a second in selecting Neil over his peers. To my certain knowledge, twice before Apollo 11, Armstrong was involved in missions where the technology failed and he was almost sure of dying. Yet, his ability to think, make the right decision, and act under extreme circumstances, meant that he [and co-astronaut Dave Scott] saved themselves. A reluctant celebrity and a brilliant and modest individual. He was an example for all of us. I will remember him.

Neil Armstrong was one of my heroes, too, and like TSS I don't have many of those. The words 'hero' and 'legend' are bandied about all too cheaply, especially these days, but he was a true hero and legend. He and his colleagues on Apollo 11 went to the Moon, not knowing if they could land there and, if they had, they may not have been able to take off again, resulting in certain death. Armstrong, with Buzz Aldrin, made history by being the first humans to walk on another world and remain only two of twelve people to have done so.

I can still remember vividly watching the lunar landings live - we all were fascinated by it - the risks he and his fellow astronauts took to win the space race were immense - never to be forgotten - RIP.

For some reason I've failed to acknowledge the existence of this thread thus far.

I'm not usually one for pointless sentiment, but Neil Armstrong was a bloody hero. Good thing he lived long enough to see the Curiosity landing.

I remember staying up to see the landing. Had to go to work on about two hours sleep. Was one of those events that you didn't want to miss. Incredible bravery for all the astronauts as there was no realistic hope of rescue.

I do wish I'd been around for that. It must have seemed like such a massive milestone at the time.
