I'll ask you Billy, given this interaction do you think Delia had no say in the appointment of Adams.
Delia and Michael certainly wanted Adams in charge, or if not in charge, to be a big part of the first team set up. Ultimately it was McNally who probably had the final say though. I'd argue all the board were hurt and somewhat shocked by the Hughton affair - I'm not sure any of them were really thinking rationally.
No she had a say - but what i got from her is that she genuinely saw NA as the manager the fans wanted more than anyone else and that would get the fans behind the team and manager again. She thought and understood why the fans became disillusioned with CH. She also said 'If i had to pay as much as you guys did for away games and travelling for the football served. Im not sure if I would have kept going so thanks for the support.' I think she wanted NA in charge to give the club a lift by getting the fans excited to see the team play and support someone they wanted to do well.
Having seen anybody say that she made the decision rather than McNally. Clutching at straws are we? Of course you, me. Delia and everybody else at the Club had an opinion but, as I keep saying, McNally made the final decision
McNally will have had the final say but I don't think there's much doubt Adams was pushed heavily in his direction. As I say, I think McNally was hurt by the Hughton affair and I think his judgement was wayward as a result. I do think he likes Adams (he's a likeable chap) and will have seen the positives being presented. Getting the fans back on side will have been crucial at that time but I think that proves that all their decision making was based on this. Not the best way to find a manager really. This time it's been a complete contrast - again, possibly further evidence that emotions in the summer played too big a role.
I heard that Mcnally pushed heavily for managers to take NA as their assistant during interview and feeling out process and wanted an experienced manager to 'guarantee' promotion with Adams by side to get support from fans as a natural progression of Adams career. When no one would take him and the final 3 candidates had been whittled down to just Adams he was left with no choice. This was all with the view of promoting Adams to manager in the future but not without working as assistant first.
