Negative Aspects of Technology

While no one can deny the improvements to society brought about by phones and tablets, certain things concern me, or maybe I am just a good ol luddite.
1. The demise of cash. I find it bewildering the number of people who use a card to buy a single cup of coffee or a pint. It's especially annoying when their card or phone ferks up and you have to wait while they get it fixed.
2. Is it just me or is handwriting, spelling and grammar becoming a quaint old custom ? Acronyms and abreviations seem to be on the march mainly due ( I believe ) to social media chat boards, predictive text on phones. Poor spelling and grammar does boil my pi55.
3. Can people not even put their phones down when walking in the street, stepping off a pavement or even in a bar/club?

I agree on 2 & 3 but getting rid of the hassle of cash is great. Rarely have or use it now, much easier.

Haha that’s a nice list of first problems there mate. I’ll certainly agree some of these things can be annoying but like you say it’s a small price to pay for the benefits, I know I wouldn’t be alive to moan about these things if we didn’t have this technology. The first point I can’t agree with you though, there was nothing worse than having a pocket full of coins especially on a night out!! Language skills totally agree as mine is terrible but it does what I need it to do I’m just 2 lazy 2 fix it lol. Point 3 certainly when it dangerous or stupid.

My main gripes with technology is when it doesn’t work how it supposed to and that many industries don’t advance at the same pace. Housing is a good example where I think with a little more outlay we could built far better modern homes but not at the expense of profit margins.

Cause if you don’t proof read your full quotation the auto check will get it wrong for you

I had a 'phone call last wednesday (a prearranged survey to do with my job) and I asked this lad to speak properly. He asked what I meant and I said 'it's three months, not free months' and he said 'that's what I said'
I said it again and he said that he was a little bit insulted !
I said 'if you can't be bothered to speak properly I can't be bothered to listen to you' and I put the 'phone down.

The problem is because nobody corrects this appalling/lazy grammar, therefore it becomes acceptable (to some)

If I had said something like 'frewout history' instead of 'throughout history' when I was a bairn, someone would have corrected me and I would only have needed to be told once, but even teachers accept it now !
I actually know a teacher who talks like a ficko . . . . how's she employed as one

1 I definitely think we're heading towards a cashless society as that process is already underway.

2 Again, something else I'd expect to see increase as typing on a phone or tablet for a real time 'conversation' is completely different from sitting and composing a letter. I actually see parallels between modern day phone technology and the printing press. Both technologies had major implications for the society that produced them and played/ are playing a part in that society changing.

3 Gets me how much of the older generation, like me, who are like this. Young uns I could understand as they've grown up in it so it's perfectly normal to them. What was normal to me growing up was a 2p and 10p slot on a payphone and waiting for the pips. The idea that you could have a hand held device to communicate with folk or connect to some sort of database was genuine science fiction, not an everday normality. I'm canny certain that there's still a part of my brain distrusts it all as some sort of voodoo magic.

Use of American terms creeping in to the English language

I dread gan on courses cause I kna the tutor will say at least these two phrases

Free and three is harsh. That's not laziness it's a speech impediment that hasn't been corrected.

Apart from a few, it's not a speech impediment at all . . . . it's pure laziness, from either people that can't be bovvad to speak properly or younguns who haven't been corrected (in some cases by lazy people who can't be bothered to put them right)

My dad was really strict on the English language
He never used slang words and our family was chastised for our mistakes
However I do have a reasonable grasp of the language
Nevertheless my downfall is my spelling which has held me back over the years
It stops me from conducting my self on paper shall we say
With the introduction of computers and spell checker it has helps me slightly
Then there is the typing you have to learn and that sometimes contributes to lazy composing
