What you have to realise is that a market is a made up thing, it doesn't really mean anything. It's something that is the creation of the minds and wills of the stakeholders involved in the game.
The thing is though, like the article states no one is willingly controlling this, it's almost like a number of key people; Agents, players, fans and others are influencing decisions. The free thinking and self awareness of the market is the subconscious though and actions of the people involved, it's like one giant subconscious network.
This phenomenon is clearly there for all to see in the stock market, I have no logical reason to doubt that this is not at least feasible.
