If state services are outperforming private services in a respectable western nation then I'm going to go into shock and possibly have a cardiac arrest.
It already happens though. According to the governments own figures they already spend more than 35 times as much per head of population on infrastructure in London than they do in areas such as the north-east, cornwall, the far north-west and more than 5 times as much per head of population as they do in areas such as Birmingham and Manchester. I know these areas will get more as they have a greater population, but to get that much more per head is wrong.
and yet it is happening - again according to the government's own indicators - and yet they still want to privatise it again as a matter of principle, despite the fact hat three different private companies have failed to make it work - the last one so badly that the government had to nationalise it to keep the services running. It is now making a profit for the national treasury and they want to sell it off again.
I'm quite impressed with your knowledge. I hope you are firmly on the right Sir. Be good to have you on our side
I'm afraid not I believe firmly that a society should be judged on how it looks after it's weakest and most vulnerable, and that compassion is an important part of any civilised society. Where some use the line 'the rich western countries are subsiding the poor eastern countries' as a reason to criticise I see it as an ideal that shows a better way of being. I hope the world my children grow up in becomes a fairer place and not when where everyone is out for what they can get for themselves.
Depends how you measure performance - I'd consider 100% health coverage in the UK as better performing that just over 80% in the US. I think markets reach their moral limits when it involves letting someone die of cancer because they can't afford the drug treatments.
Do you seriously expect the unemployed to pay their rent/mortgage and utility bills with food tokens?
