I think it's been a combination of available players and formation used. I'm pretty sure that Howson said just the other day that his preferred position is CAM, too. I completely agree that it's his best position. Hopefully he will get an opportunity over the next couple of weeks in a 4-5-1 with two of Johnson, Tettey and O'Neil. I suspect, with the best will in the world, McGrandles probably still isn't ready.
Here's some of my assessments which others may disagree with: Whittaker - 4: I don't like to single-out and blame players but I really feel that Whittaker has been below par and is the weak link in the team. He is often robbed of possession and caught out of position but perhaps most frustratingly he doesn't add anything to our attack. Martin - 6: Much better when playing at number 2. Turner - 8: Not got a bad thing to say about him. Tettey - 7: Adds solidity to our midfield. Consistent and I think he is the enabler for us to keep so much possession with his tackling and ability to snuff out counter attacks. Grabban - 5: Although he deserves some credit for his six goals, I honestly believe that given the chances that Grabban has had this season, that Van Wolfswinkel and Becchio would have bettered his goal tally. He needs a lot of good chances just to put one away and it's just not good enough.
