I agree with everything except the last paragraph. Short was undoubtedly fed up to the back teeth throwing away his money keeping a losing side going. But go back to when we got to a Cup Final. His picture splashed all over the back pages, full publicity, he was a very happy bunny then. I just wonder if he might have been OK about supporting a decent side.
Think a first half of season above relegation positions might have tempted Short to give a little money. Sam (assuming he’d stayed)could have probably made good use of a little money . If not that season , we’d still go down, we’d clung on too long , but we’d have had enough to not drop further.
A. I honestly believe he was the perfect fit for us and we would of been know where near relegation but I still prefer what we have now enjoy every weekend at the moment.

There is another thing that may well have helped Sam to stay with us. WE LIKED HIM, just as we had when he played for us. He was popular in a way that he had not been since he left Bolton. No whining on about 'The Long Ball Game'. No tosh about 'The Sunderland Way'. We had been watching rubbish for so long that giving us a few extra home wins a Season would do it. Compare his reception from us to the West Ham Fans who only cheered when he left them.
A. And the good thing about big Sam was that he wanted to be at the club. I honestly believe he would have got us to be a regular mid-table club and that Short would have backed him. The only job that was going to take him away from us was the England job and the bloody thing came up at the worst possible time for us.
I got the impression Sam wasnt happy at the time. Rumours of him leaving, whether the England job popped up or not.
Yeh? I don't really recall that mate. Things might have been going pear-shaped between him and Short by that time already. I'm just not aware of it.
And to think Moyes was Shorts man that he wanted for five years I believe.....well when we got him he certainly put the final nail in Short's tenure. All ended in a big mess sadly. The best thing was Bain consulted with him about his successor.....holy moly.
Doubt it was given we were after Ndong with Sam in charge. Pretty likely they were both working off the same scout list. Though I think Sam wanted to nail down them both. Would Sam have done a better Job on Ndong than Moyes? don't doubt it for a second. I think it was James hunter who said on a podcast that even if the England job hadn't came up Sam was leaving due to Short and money etc so we'd have been in exactly the same predicament really.
That's along the lines of what Sprouts said earlier as well. I really don't recall that. Shame really, at the time I thought Sam was going to bring some real stability back to the club.
Not really sure what you're getting at here. I was under the impression that N'Dong and Djilobodji were coming in no matter who was manager. Doesn't change the fact that I can see Moyes not wanting to bring back one of our better players just out of sheer bloody-mindedness or just to prove some kind of point because his arrogance far outweighs his ability as a football manager.
Only reasons I think that are firstly his complete lack of comment about SAFC/Fans/Club/Players after he left and because of the Palace thing. Palace chairman weren't going to back him which is why he went from there (from what I heard from various outlets anyhow). Think something had happened which soured him before the England job came knocking. Plus we'd have had to sack him when the telegraph ****ed him over anyway!!
This doesn't look like someone who wants away, to me at least. Yeah that was immediately after he’d saved us. Think things turned sour with Short in the weeks following survival.
Kirchoff and M'villa were crucial to us, Gibson and Pienaar were not as good. Sam set his stall higher, Short was clueless.
