we've played better than today and dropped points this season a fair few times. It was a good performance but not near our best. Sometimes the opposition get a couple of chances in the first half and score both (Sunderland could have) but today they missed. The last half hour was a stroll as the match was already over.
"Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard says the club's new signing Daniel Sturridge can have "no excuses" if he fails to become a success at Anfield." (Source: BBC Football website) So, what has been Gerrard's excuse, these past few seasons? Really, Gerrard is in absolutely no position to start giving it large with the new lad. You'd have thought he'd have learned his lesson after his infamous "we can finish 2nd" gaffe.
If he is a failure he can just cash in on a 'Joe Cole style mouser redundancy package' £3M for agreeing to leave.
Or the Harry Redknapp style spud redundancy package. Having won a grand total of zero trophys he gets £3M for agreeing to leave.
For you lot survival and less than occasional CL qualification is good enough. We like stocking the cabinet. CL qualification is about money. Not success, there's a difference
Everything's about money to some degree. When's the last time a team won the Champions League or league and didn't have one of the highest wage bills? We're the only team to finish in the top 4 spending less than £100mill on wages since you did it in 07-08 and that was when there were only 3 teams spending over £100mill anyway so you were still the 4th biggest spender. When we finished 4th(1st time) we were spending half what City were about 55% of what you were and that's pretty much the only case you'll find of anyone bucking the money trend, at the top you don't get anomalies like that anymore. To clubs like us and Everton, CL qualification is more important than any trophy because the £40mill(more like £30mill really) is imperative for us to even start to compete financially, which is the only way you can compete long term at the top. You can go on about League Cups as some sort of honour but for a club with as much history as yours(you keep reminding us about it...) they're hardly significant and the FA Cup has all but lost it's prestige, similar to the Europa League. Nowadays it's about qualifying for Europe's top tournament and the best team that qualifies also wins the league.
Europa League losing its prestige? I blame Harry from the Spurs point of view. The fans wanted to win it,but Harry wasn't interested. He seemed to think it was the Football Combination so he played a lot of reserves!......and it showed!!!!!
Were you saying that in 2005 and 2007 when you won it or reached the final or in 2008 when you made the semi? Nah - didn't think so
Interesting set of figures from Goal.com... I've been pointed in the direction of some laughter-inducing figures. Tottenham have acquired Gareth Bale, Aaron Lennon, Sandro, Mousa Dembele, Emmanuel Adebayor and Lewis Holtby for a total of £36 million. Meanwhile, Liverpool splashed £98m on Jordan Henderson, Andy Carroll, Stewart Downing, Joe Allen and Daniel Sturridge. MONEYBALL. in fact, it's worth more than one..
