Because with Porto aside he's been given the perfect platform to succeed. Chelsea have pretty much an unlimited financial backing - he'd never have joined them otherwise. Inter had won the Serie A before he joined and had one of their best squads in years. Madrid... I don't really need to talk about Madrid now do I? While the achievements are fantastic and I won't take them away from him, I'm sure most managers would love the opportunities he's had in football. Which is why I call him lucky, not saying he's a bad manager but I'd never put him in the league of the likes of SAF, Shankly etc. Good but not a great, a great for me is someone who can start from pretty much scratch and build a team that wins and challenges for major honours. Taking over teams already expected to do so, while is a good achievement to meet the high targets/ expectations, I don't think it makes them "Special". Like I said, put Jose in charge of Palace and if he can turn them into title challengers then I'll believe the hype. Plus, the fact that I don't like him will always mean my opinion of him will be negative.
Perfect platform? Mourinho joined Porto when they were 5th and hadn't won the league in over 3 years. That doesn't happen in football now, does it? Football has changed... Do you really think ferguson, shankly could of made palace into title challengers with the likes of united, arsenal, tottenham, chelsea, city?
Did you not read the bit where I said "Porto aside"? Managers can definitely play a role in building platforms and getting success with teams this day and age, it's harder due to the money being thrown around nowadays but it's not impossible. And I think you're underestimating the influence SAF (and Shankly) can have on teams/ players. Look at the Utd under SAF and the Utd currently under Moyes... Same team bar Fellaini and Zaha yet Utd look woeful at present. Swansea for instance, Martinez started the footballing brand which was improved by Rodgers (and even more so under Laudrop) and within the past decade they've gone from League 1 to the Prem with a Capital One Cup trophy and being known as one of the best teams to watch. Albeit it's down to the work of 3 managers but it shows that a team can be built from pretty much scratch. A few of their players were playing in League 1 for them, so it shows how managers can definitely raise a players game. Klopp is the best example though, you could argue that he's done a SAF-esque performance with Dortmund. The batch of youngsters he's moulded into pretty much world stars is an amazing piece of work, got them their first Bundesliga title for 10 years in the 2011 season and retained it the following year and only just narrowly lost to Bayern in the CL Final last season. He's won a few domestic cups too. Mourinho's a very good manager don't get me wrong, I'm not saying he's bad by any means but I do believe he's been lucky after Porto. The three teams he's managed has, like I said, had great platforms for success, whether it be money or the level of players he was inheriting. His arrogance is what makes it worse, I genuinely think that he believes he's far better than what he is, which is why I have such negative views towards him.
