In this context, it is being copied. It's being shared with, and consumed by people who haven't paid for it, or at least not paid the PL for it. Does that make more sense now? PH - Nah, only the ones who've had a visit from the PL Lawyers.
It does and it doesn't. If, as many of these pubs do, they've bought the ultimate package and also a subscription from the host broadcaster, they've paid more than the bar in Greece showing the same images and the PL will have the cut from them in the same way. I think that forms the basis of the defence from the Portsmouth pub.
Well there was a landlady who challenged them in the courts and won, but that was based on her buying a European package, and with free trade across EU countries I think. The issue with these other streams I think is they are from outside of the EU?
Well I hope hey do 'cos I'm off to one to watch it, not saying which one on here though, the forums have eyes
I think there must be legal ways of showing it. Pubs are broadcasting their intentions to show non-televised games for all to see with big signs outside the premises. Also I was talking to the manager of the Hull branch of Riley's (snooker club in town (no idea if it's Tickler's or not)) and he reckoned they pay for some package which lets them show all City games legally.
The Portsmouth pub got off the prosecution, in that they didn't get fined, but they were still in breach of copyright and were not allowed to continue showing games.
Gary Lineker ‏@GaryLineker 7m The reason MOTD is only on Wednesday is because PL contract only allows one midweek show. Obvs we've gone with Wed so we can cover all games
Indeed they do, and they also send emails out to all members (I'm one) advertising the matches every week. It's above board I think. Somehow.
